There’s no greater feeling than when we know we're having an amazing hair day!

    JRJulianneRWUpstageEWCodeMonoRPAngelicaRPCameron

Wigs make every day a great hair day. But just how much should you spend for great hair?

    1. Not all wigs are created equal.

Premium features like lace-front and human hair can make all the difference in how natural your hair looks and feels. But just because one feature is more expensive than another doesn’t make it the right choice for you.

    2. Price is what you pay. Value is what you get.

Did you know that a good quality cap can take up to 30 hours to make! The meticulous craftsmanship that goes into each hand-made design ensures wearing your favorite, cute style feels like wearing nothing at all. Learn more about Cap Construction here.

    3. Not having to spend hours in the salon chair…Priceless.

Think about the time suck of your last salon visit. Remember the anxiety of hoping they get the cut right? The awkwardness of convincing yourself that “It’s just a haircut” when they didn’t?

Higher-end wigs are all about giving you the perfect salon look without a trip to the salon. You get just the style you want. And because the denier and texture of quality synthetic hair looks and feels so much like human hair, human hair wigs are not your only option. Checkout out our previous post about synthetic and human hair to find out which is really the best choice for you.

Having a great hair day is like a perfectly timed, witty comeback. You feel like you can take on the world. Give yourself permission to feel as great as you know you are. You’re totally worth it!

Human hair that is used in the alternative hair industry goes through extensive processing for sorting, coloring, texturizing, etc. before it is attached to the base of a wig, hair system, or extension. Due to this processing, alternative human hair must be cared for differently than biological hair. Following proper care and product recommendations will help you protect your investment and have a successful experience with your human hair piece:

Jon Renau recommends washing your wig or hairpiece every 6-8 wears

The common misconception about care is that by washing your wig/hair system more often, the cap and fiber will not last as long. On the contrary, washing every 6-8 wears ensures you are removing the sweat, make up, and oils from your skin that sit within the elastic base of the cap and break down the cap much faster.

Deep condition your human hair wig or hairpiece every 3-5 washes to keep the vitality of the human hair

Keep away from any hand-tied areas of the base when applying conditioners, conditioning treatments, or any oil-based products. These products can loosen the hand-tied knots over time and cause hair loss in your wig/hair system.

Use care products that are specifically formulated for alternative hair
Although professional salon products are formulated and work great for biological hair, alternative human hair requires different care. It is essential to use only products that are specifically formulated for alternative human hair and refrain from using salon or drugstore care products.

    Use professional styling tools
Whether the hair is wet or dry it is important to take special care when removing tangles. We recommend using a brush with plenty of cushion in the base and flexible wide-spaced bristles. This design prevents excessive pulling that causes breakage in the hair, in the knots or in the delicate area of the lace front or monofilament.

Our pick: Jon Renau Paddle Brush

When blow drying, we recommend using a boar bristle brush with about 20% nylon bristles to adequately grab the hair without creating too much tension. Additionally, the brush’s nylon bristles must be longer than the boar bristles in order to help smooth the hair and ensure a sleek finish.

Our pick: Jon Renau Round Boar Bristle Brush

This brush is intended for use on human hair only, not traditional or high heat synthetic fibers.

    Use professional grade heat-styling tools
Professional grade tools are meant to deliver well-distributed heat without causing damage to the hair via their ceramic or tourmaline plates versus the less expensive metal or glass plates found in lower quality tools. The digital temperature settings on professional heat-styling tools also ensure you are working at the correct temperature all the time. To help maintain the integrity of the hair, your styling tools should be set no higher than 350° F when working with human hair.

We recommend only using non-sticking protectants and styling sprays that prevent heat damage to your human hair wig or hair piece.

Our pick: Jon Renau Heat Treat Thermal Spray

1 in 4 women in the United States have some form of hair loss. Hair loss comes in many forms, from thin, fine hair at the front hairline to advanced diffused hair loss throughout. Not every woman is ready for a full system or wig; Jon Renau toppers are great for everything ranging from fashion to the mid-progressive stages of hair loss.

How to properly measure for a topper:
Follow these steps to determine the size of the area that needs coverage.

    1. Determine the area of hair loss
    2. Using a fabric measuring tape, measure area from front to back and record results
    3. Measure area from side to side and record results

Be sure to factor in clip attachments on base. There must be a sufficient amount of hair to attach clip to.

How to choose the right base:
Use the chart below to determine which topper is best for you. Be sure to check the “BASE DIMENSIONS” column for the proper base size, based on your measurements. Remember, the clips must attach in an area with a sufficient amount of hair.

    How to apply a topper:
Follow these steps to properly apply the topper you have chosen.

    1. Place over area of hair loss and check in the mirror for balance and style
    2. Apply front of topper about 1”-2” (2.5 - 5 cm) back from the natural hair line. Incorporate natural hairline (if available) for most natural look
    3. Secure front clip. Place hand on top of base to support as you secure the back clip(s), keeping base flat and taught against head. Do not pull when applying
    4. Secure side clips, keeping base flat and taught against head
    5. Blend topper with hair and style as desired

    TIP:
If there is no hair present at the clip attachment site, you can remove the clip and apply using adhesive (on polyurethane areas only)

    The Truth

You’ve heard the phrase, “You get what you pay for.” And if you’ve spent any amount of time with wigs, you've noticed that the ones made of human hair are generally more expensive than the ones made of synthetic fiber. But does that necessarily exclude one over the other as the better choice?

The truth is Human hair and Synthetic hair both have their advantages and disadvantages. Let’s take a look at just a few of them.

    Human Hair

    Advantages

Of all the hair types, human hair looks and feels the most natural. Remy human hair is considered a premium option because its easier to style and stays relatively tangle free due to all the follicles being kept in the same direction during construction. Human hair is remarkably soft with a shine and movement not easily duplicated by synthetic hair. Its versatility allows you to style it like your own hair with curls or bone straight with a durability that can last over a year!

    Disadvantages

Not only is it more expensive than synthetic hair, but just like natural hair, human hair wigs requires a lot more time and effort to style and maintain. If you have a busy lifestyle or a low budget, this may not be the choice for you. And just like natural hair, human hair will react to weather conditions.

    Synthetic Hair

Synthetic Hair: Sparkle by Raquel Welch

    Heat-Friendly Synthetic by Raquel Welch

    Advantages

With all the technological strides the wearable hair industry is making, synthetic hair looks and behaves more and more like human hair. The fact that most synthetic wigs can be worn right out of the box with minimal or no styling requirements makes it a more attractive choice. And, unlike human hair, synthetic hair will hold its style regardless of the climate.

    Disadvantages

It’s just this resistance to change that makes this type of hair a poor choice if you desire the versatility of styling. In most cases the synthetic fiber has “memory” which means that the wave and curl patterns are permanently set; styling any other way is nearly impossible. There are heat-friendly synthetic options which allow styling like human hair wigs. But styling is still a challenge due to the fiber’s natural resistance to change.

    Bottom Line

Ideally, you want both types of hair on hand as both are great choices for different situations. The best one depends on your budget, time and needs.

    Final Words of Wisdom

Regardless of which type of hair you choose, remember that it is always important to follow our care recommendations in order to get the optimal life span from your hair!

If you’ve been purchasing the same wig in the same color for years, you’ve probably run into the situation where the manufacturer decided they are no longer producing your wig in that color. And if you’ve tried to replace it for a similar wig in the same color but maybe a different material, you’ve probably been disappointed because the color doesn’t look the same as it did on your monitor when you received it.  Frustrating!

The reason this happens is because the material a wig is made of will affect the color.

If you paint three objects the same color but one is made of brass, the other of plastic and the third of wood, the brown color will look different on each one.

In the same way the same shade of brown will look different on a wig made of human hair, synthetic fiber, and even heat-friendly synthetic wigs.
