    DAY 33

It’s raining cats and dogs and as I pull into work my wig looks perfect. This is a big deal because I styled it all by myself and I am not the best at primping my own hair. It’s a short and dark, one length wig from Louis Ferre made of human hair. The quality is amazing! At first the lace wouldn't lay down properly on my forehead so I thought it may be defective. But it's almost like it just figured out my head shape because after I styled it (flat ironed the waves which took me too long!) the hair feels incredible and looks great!

    DAY 38

I’ve noticed that no matter how secure I know my wig is I keep touching it to make sure it hasn’t ridden up. I’m not sure if this is a nervous habit I developed because it took a couple of weeks for me to get the 'putting on' process down. But once I start tugging my hair underneath begins moving. I made a conscious effort not to touch it and trust it is where it belongs. I found myself still doing mirror checks just to be sure.

    DAY 41

Three days later and the not-tugging-on-my-wig-to-make-sure-it’s-in-place effort is working like a dream. What a difference! It turns out the problem was my own insecurity about my wig moving. Today was my first real experience with cold set, which is when a wig sits in a box a long time, or is exposed to extreme temperatures while in the box. It sets the hair in a weird shape, (usually on top or in front). I learned to spritz it down with water, rub my hands together vigorously and touch it up. The heat from your hands resets the hair!

    DAY 46

I'm learning so many things about hair color. The only thing that's changed on me over the last month or so has been my hair. But there’s a difference in the way I’m treated depending on which color I choose for the day. I received the most compliments on my hair as a brunette. I feel the most at home in this color. The consensus seems to be that I look younger, "classier" was the word used. But as a blonde I received more concessions: men allowed me to go first in line; I got little extras at the counter; and (of course) I got looked at. Even women were giving me the “once over”. Each color has its advantage for sure.

    DAY 13

I have to say not having to do my hair every morning sure is nice. It takes about three minutes to brush it back and put a wig on. Loving it! And note to self… I have decided I DO NOT like nylon wig caps. The little band starts to hurt my head after about three or four hours. I don't think my head is too big, but maybe I should measure it anyway. I have learned NOT to comb my hair straight back. It makes my head sore with the wig on like when you wear a really tight ponytail all day. But when I comb my hair over to the side and pull it back it feels much better all day!

    DAY 19

Nope. My head is regular size. I'm learning never to brush my wig from the top down. I find I get much better results when I use my fingers or the BeautiMark comb. It looks way more natural! I picked up my kids in a long dark wig that was the same color as my natural hair and my daughter was so excited. She said I look like her! She kept staring at me and said I looked so much different than I have been lately. Isn’t it amazing how hair can make such a difference in the way we are perceived?

    DAY 24

Speaking of perceptions, the question people keep asking me is, “Is it hot?” I guess that's the general perception. In fact, it is one of the top questions almost everyone asks when I talk about wearing wigs. The truth is it really isn't hot. Not the good ones anyway! Of course, I'm mindful that the Texas 100° months are behind me so I'm sure anything is hot then. However, so far, the wigs are really very breathable and comfortable. I had squeaky clean hair today. It was straight which helped my wig slip on easier. I put a little hair spray on my head around the front to help it stay in place. Oh, and I also tried the nylon again. I really didn't like it before. But I snipped a little slit in the elastic band and it works great. It holds my hair back but doesn't press in on my head!

    DAY 31

So today I asked everyone in the office to join me in my challenge by wearing a wig for the day so they too can understand our clients a little better! It was so much fun seeing people try on this lifestyle for a day. It was very enlightening for some people, and it might've started an addiction for others. Although I work here, I don't have access to see every color we have every week. So I ordered one based on the color I saw online. When I got it, it looked a little different than it did online. However, once I put it on and went outside it looked more like the color online under natural light. Now I know what my clients are talking about when they have this issue.

If you're new to wigs, one of the first and most important steps is to measure your head. We know how traumatic and stressful hair loss can be, so knowing the right wig cap size from the beginning is essential. Take the time to measure your head with a measuring tape, and you'll be on your way to finding the perfect wig.

    Cap Size

While average size wigs tend to fit about 95% of customers, you'll find that many wigs also come in petite and large sizes. Consider that many also have adjustable straps that give up to a half inch so that you can achieve a comfortable and secure fit.

    Wig Cap Size Chart

To determine the right size wig for you, measure the circumference of your head from the front hairline, behind your hear, to the nape of your neck, to your other ear and then back to the front hairline. Write down your measurement, then consult the table below. Please note that sizes may vary slightly by brand and that not all wigs are available in all cap sizes.
