Do we hear a unanimous cringe? Yeah, most of us have a hair problems, don't stress out tress outspray-in hair highlighter or perm horror story to tell and boy, are they scary (and ugly!). We’ve all been there – stuck with a case of bad hair blues. Think about how long it took you to grow out those self-cut bangs, or that bad perm… painful to think about it, isn’t?

The thing is too often you end up with a hairstyle that is either too costly, high maintenance or damaging to your natural hair. There’s no reason why you should put your hair under so much stress, especially if your hair is thinning and falling out.

With summer only a few weeks away you must be itching for a new look. And we all know you’d do just about anything in the name of good hair. But would you give wigs and hair extensions a chance?

    Hair Extensions & Wigs

The times are changing and alternative hair is becoming the norm. Just take a look around you! It’s super easy to change up your hairstyle with a wig or hair extensions - and the choices are endless. You can go from long to short hair without ever picking up a pair of scissors. If you’re looking to be a sassy redhead for the night, or have wildly curly or sexy tousled hair, you really don’t need to resort to those harsh chemicals that will harm your own hair.

Protect your hair by wearing wigs and clip-in hair extensions. There’s no shame in wearing them, they’ll only make your life easier.

As we’ve learned before in our previous monofilament wig post, wigs made with a monofilament cap construction are super natural looking wigs. The monofilament wig hand-knotting process is long and tedious, but the result is incredibly natural! Since each strand of hair is manually hand-knotted into the monofilament material this allows the hair to lie and flow naturally. There’s much to learn about monofilament wigs, so let’s chat about the different types of monofilament wigs!

    Hand-Tied Monofilament Wigs

    Monofilament Wig: Top

The first we’ll talk about are monofilament tops (also known as mono tops). A monofilament top covers the entire top part of the wig. This is where you would naturally part your hair. Also, these wigs have open-wefted sides and back, which are machine made. The mono top is a mesh-like material with individual strands of either synthetic or human hair hand-knotted into it. In terms of flexibility, these are the kinds of wigs you would get the most out of.

    Monofilament Wig: Part

A monofilament part is a part line located at a fixed location on the wig. The designated section features a thin strip of monofilament. So, you can purchase a wig with a left, right or center monofilament part. A mono part has a more affordable cost compared to a monofilament top wig. The part, however, cannot be changed – so choose wisely!

    Monofilament Wig: Crown

As the name suggests the monofilament is placed at the crown of the wig. This construction is more commonly found in bob wig styles. The benefits of having a mono crown wig are that it distributes the hair evenly and naturally at the root. Also it gives the look of natural hair growth at the crown of the hair, which makes your bob wig much more believable.

    FAQ Monofilament Wig

    Are monofilament wigs durable?

Yes, they are but remember the monofilament material is delicate so it should be treated carefully. Do not pull harshly on the hair because this could loosen up the hand-knotted strands of hair.

Can I wash my monofilament wig the same as my other wigs?

Yes, you may wash your monofilament wig but do not add conditioner at the root. The conditioner will loosen up the hand-knotted strands of hair.

If I color my human hair wig, will it stain the monofilament?

Because the monofilament material is sheer and thin it will add a hint of color but will not stain the monofilament wig completely. The monofilament top, part or crown will still have a realistic look.

Want the look of a monofilament wig for less? A Skin Part wig gives you a natural looking part without the high cost. However, these wigs are not to be confused with hand-tied monofilament wigs because the part is machine-made. The appearance of skin is simulated with a polyurethane section in which a machine inserts the fiber to create the look of a scalp. Although less common, skin part wigs are an affordable substitute to a monofilament wig.

    Wedding Hairstyle

You only get married once in a lifetime… for the first time (hey, it happens!). Which is why you are expected to look picture perfect on your wedding day. Now I don’t know about you, but that’s a lot of pressure.

Besides the dress, the wedding hairstyle and makeup are two of the most essential components of that picture-perfect look. Like makeup, the hair must be expertly sculpted into place. This is easier said than done, especially if it happens to rain on your wedding day. So what’s a gal to do?

    Wigs for Your Wedding Hairstyle

Believe it or not, it’s ok to wig out on your wedding day. No, seriously it is, and no one will call you Bridezilla either.

In other words, you have the option of choosing to wear a wig for your wedding hairstyle. You’re guaranteed a head full of beautiful hair and the perfect wedding hairstyle just the way you like it.

Convinced yet? Well, before you run off to make your purchase, here are a couple of tips you’ll want to consider prior to choosing your wedding hairstyle.

Wig Tips for Your Wedding Hairstyle

    1. Lace is usually associated with weddings for its delicate and intricate beauty. While it’s true that a lace wedding dress is not for everyone, a lace front wig certainly is. Lace front wigs are going to offer the most natural and seamless appearance, because the lace front is made from a mesh-like material that is designed to blend in with your skin to mimic your natural hairline. This helps disguise the wig so that no one can tell where it begins. Tip: If the lace front does not match your skin tone, you can use makeup to blend it into your skin.
    2. Updos are the quintessential go-to wedding hairstyle because of their elegant and put-together look. And, guess what? You can wear a wig in an updo as well. The trick is to keep the style low and loose, in order to hide the wig at the nape. You can wear a low chignon, side updo, or even a loose pony – all of these looks will result in a beautiful and romantic wedding hairstyle. Tip: Apply some adhesive or tape to keep the weight of the hair from pulling back the wig.
    3. Another crucial point to consider is the kind of fiber to purchase. If you’re set on the wedding hairstyle you want, you may want to purchase a synthetic hair wig in the style you desire. However, if you like a little flexibility, you’ll want to purchase a fiber that is easily customizable such as human hair or heat-friendly synthetic hair. Though when it comes to stylability, human hair wigs are the way to go for your wedding hairstyle. Tip: Human hair wigs such as Angie & Kate will retain fullness and body even after they are washed.

At the end of the day the possibilities for a fabulous wedding hairstyle are endless! With the wide variety of wigs available today you’re sure to find the perfect one for you. Sarah-Catherine, winner of the video contest, wore her favorite go-to wig, Sky by Noriko as her wedding hairstyle. She danced the night away in beautiful picture perfect hair… and you can too.

Wig Colors - Ombre & Renau Naturals for Sophia Elite & Sienna Elite

Sophia Elite & Sienna Elite wigs

    Wig Colors for Everyone!

As you read last week, the new Jon Renau Spring 2012 Wig Collection made its debut at Need to make an impression? Grab one of these hot celeb-inspired wig styles and you’re set. But that’s not all! This collection’s Elite styles (Sophia & Sienna) are available in their NEW human hair wig colors: Renau Ombre and Renau Naturals! We’ll explain why we’re so excited about these wig colors below.

    Renau Ombre Wig Colors

In case you’ve been living under a rock, the Ombre trend is all the rage at the moment. From Rhianna to your mama, EVERYONE is rocking the look. And thankfully, Jon Renau incorporated this trend into the collection. Renau’s interpretation of the trend is perfect because the transition of color is so subtle and natural; it is not harsh or artificial. Renau Ombre achieves a natural graduated tone of color that begins darker at the root and lightens as it reaches the tips - resulting in beautiful wig colors.

Light Ombre and Dark Ombre are available for all human hair Jon Renau Elite styles: Sophia, Sienna, Angie, Kate, Carrie, Jennifer, and Nicole. Check out the video below to see exactly what these colors look like. We know you’ll love them!

    Renau Naturals Wig Colors

Nowadays wigs come in a wide variety of colors – you name it, we got it. Though, sometimes you just want to add your own unique touch. The four new Renau Naturals wig colors are perfect for this purpose. Renau Naturals wigs are less chemically processed than other wigs. This results in a much natural looking wig that may be color dyed. These wig colors are the only ones in the wig market specifically designed to deposit or lift color. This means you could personalize your Jon Renau wig to the color you desire!

While it’s true you could dye any human hair wig, the color won’t take the same way as with a wig in Renau Naturals. A more natural coloring process results in softer and healthier hair for your Jon Renau wig.

The four new wig colors are available for all human hair Jon Renau Elite styles: Sophia, Sienna, Angie, Kate, Carrie, Jennifer, and Nicole. You can learn more about Renau Naturals by watching the video below.

    Tips for Renau Naturals:
    • Always take your wig to a salon professional for best results.
    • Color can be deposited but may only be lightened up to one level.
    • For highlights, purchase a lighter color wig and deposit lowlights.

What's your face got to do with it?

As much as you covet Michelle Williams' perfect pixie or Rose Byrne's blunt bangs and bob combo, for one reason or another you hesitate. Something inside tells you that not only do both of those styles imply drastic changes, but you know they simply don't go with you. "I can't pull it off," you might think. And honestly, you probably can't. The culprit is your face shape. Therefore while some hairstyles are perfect, others… not so cute. Hey, we can't have it all!

That's why today we're giving you the scoop on what hairstyles to avoid and which ones to rock for your face shape:

    Round Face

    Round face shape

If you fear the roundness of your face will make you appear bigger than what you really are, don't fret! The key is to elongate and cut the width of your face.

    • Chin-length bobs, exaggerate the roundness
    • Short curly hairstyles create a round shape around your face
    • One-length cuts, accentuate the roundness of your face, especially when parted down the middle

    • Layers help soften wide cheeks
    • Side-swept bangs add length to a round face shape
    • Height at the crown lengthens the face

    We recommend these wig styles:

Infatuation by Raquel Welch Jennifer by Jon Renau Bobbi by Envy

Any hairstyle that increases the height of your face is favorable.

    Heart-Shaped Face

Your face has such a unique (and loveable) shape that will work with most hairstyles. However, having a wider forehead and pointy chin, you'll want to divert the attention from both.

    • Blunt bangs, draw attention to a pointy chin
    • Short full styles that emphasize the upper face
    • Height at the crown, draws the focus to a wide forehead

    • Rounded bobs fill out the chin by creating width to the jaw bone
    • Cheek-level layers/bangs soften a harsh pointy chin
    • Layered and wavy curls add fullness to the chin and help round out the face.

    We recommend these wig styles:

Carrie by Jon Renau Upstage by Raquel Welch Roll With It by Forever Young

Don't forget your goal is to find a hairstyle that offers balance to the face.

    Oval Face

Your face shape is among the most common and the most versatile. Aren't you a lucky gal?

    • Short layers can make face appear long
    • Curly blunt cuts, these create a pyramid effect
    • Voluminous hair hides your proportioned features

    • Short bobs give the illusion of a square face shape
    • Layers or waves to accentuate cheekbones
    • Updos and hair pulled back, show off our face

    We recommend these wig styles:

Scorpio by Revlon Christina by Wig Pro Caressa by Forever Young

Your features are balanced and proportionate – don't be afraid to try different hairstyles!

    Square Face

Worried your face is too harsh and may appear masculine? It's all good. Haven't you heard? It's hip to be square!

    • Chin-length bobs, will make your face appear boxy
    • Pixie cuts emphasize the squareness of your flat chin
    • Straight heavy bangs will only accentuate your jaw line, making it appear heavier

    • Textured hair (curls, choppy ends, soft & flowy) soften hard angles
    • 'Lobs' with side-swept, layered eye-grazing bangs give a diagonal illusion and keep the focus away from the squareness
    • Center parts make your square brow appear more narrow

    We recommend these wig styles:

Destiny by Henry Margu Nicole by Jon Renau Limelight by Raquel Welch

Some of the most beautiful women have square shape faces. You're in good company! Just remember to soften the sharp angles and minimize attention to your squared-off brow.

In terms of hair, our days can be summed up as this: the good, the bad, and the ugly.

On good days we’re flying high, flaunting our locks every which way. On bad days we throw on a hat or abuse the allotted one time a week ponytail (kudos if you got the ‘Mean Girls’ movie reference). And on ugly days? You stay home. OK, so no one really stays home due to a bad hair day, but you know you’ve thought about it... We’ve all been there.

Synthetic hair wigs and extensions to the rescue! Whether you’ve lost your hair, or the little you do have doesn’t want to cooperate, wigs and hair extensions are a girl’s best friend. Honestly, when we need the extra help there's no reason why a heat-friendly synthetic hair wig or extension can’t do the trick. You see, once properly styled, your heat-friendly synthetic hair will stay put all day long regardless of what goes on in your environment. Unlike normal hair, synthetic hair doesn’t fall victim to the elements such as humidity and rain. You haven’t seen ugly until your hairstyle has been rained on!

Styling your heat-friendly synthetic hair wigs and hair extensions is very similar to styling your own hair, with only a few exceptions. The following instructions are only for heat-friendly synthetic hair wigs and hair extensions.

Note: We recommend keeping hot tools under 350° Fahrenheit. Also, keep in mind that once you alter your wig and/or hair extension you won’t get the original style back – but don’t worry you can change the style as many times as you’d like!

Curl Heat-Friendly Synthetic Hair with Curling Iron

Want to curl your wig or hair extensions? Easy! Just follow the 3 C’s:

    1. CURL
      • First of all, DO NOT curl hair while on your head. Use a canvas block or Styrofoam head to style your wig. You can hold down your hair extensions on a table or hold it with your hand and style.
      • Make sure you comb hair free of tangles (the Hair Trix Comb by BeautiMark is ideal).
      • Take a 1–1.5inch section of hair (smaller sections give you tighter curls, larger sections give you looser curls).
      • Gather hair in curling iron, smooth through to the ends, roll up towards weft.
      • Hold for 15-20 seconds, release curl into palm.
    2. CLIP
      • Hold the curl in one hand, gather up towards the base and clip it in place.
    3. COOL
      • Let hair cool completely before removing pin to effectively set the curl.
      • Hair can be combed using an appropriate comb.

Straighten Heat-Friendly Synthetic Hair with Flat Iron

Sexy glossy straight hair is super easy!

    1. Again, DO NOT style hair while on your head.
      • Use a canvas block or Styrofoam head to style your wig.
      • You can hold down your hair extensions on a table or hold it with your hand and style.
    2. Take a 1–1.5inch section, starting at least 2inches away from the base. Slowly smooth flat iron down towards end, follow with a comb to keep hair looking smoother.
    3. Continue through ends (2-3 times if needed).
    4. Allow hair to hang naturally to cool.

Getting your “wig-on” is all fun and games, however, for the fun to actually continue we have to take proper care of our wigs. Please refer to our Synthetic Hair Special Care page to learn how.

    Tools used:

    1. Duck bill clips
    2. Hair Trix Comb by BeautiMark
    3. 1" Nano Ceramic Flat Iron with Smart Heat Controls
    4. 1" Nano Ceramic Curling Iron with Smart Heat Controls

Now you’re ready to start styling your heat-friendly synthetic hair! Wasn’t that easy?
