Tips & Tricks

In terms of hair, our days can be summed up as this: the good, the bad, and the ugly.

On good days we’re flying high, flaunting our locks every which way. On bad days we throw on a hat or abuse the allotted one time a week ponytail (kudos if you got the ‘Mean Girls’ movie reference). And on ugly days? You stay home. OK, so no one really stays home due to a bad hair day, but you know you’ve thought about it... We’ve all been there.

Synthetic hair wigs and extensions to the rescue! Whether you’ve lost your hair, or the little you do have doesn’t want to cooperate, wigs and hair extensions are a girl’s best friend. Honestly, when we need the extra help there's no reason why a heat-friendly synthetic hair wig or extension can’t do the trick. You see, once properly styled, your heat-friendly synthetic hair will stay put all day long regardless of what goes on in your environment. Unlike normal hair, synthetic hair doesn’t fall victim to the elements such as humidity and rain. You haven’t seen ugly until your hairstyle has been rained on!

Styling your heat-friendly synthetic hair wigs and hair extensions is very similar to styling your own hair, with only a few exceptions. The following instructions are only for heat-friendly synthetic hair wigs and hair extensions.

Note: We recommend keeping hot tools under 350° Fahrenheit. Also, keep in mind that once you alter your wig and/or hair extension you won’t get the original style back – but don’t worry you can change the style as many times as you’d like!

Curl Heat-Friendly Synthetic Hair with Curling Iron

Want to curl your wig or hair extensions? Easy! Just follow the 3 C’s:

    1. CURL
      • First of all, DO NOT curl hair while on your head. Use a canvas block or Styrofoam head to style your wig. You can hold down your hair extensions on a table or hold it with your hand and style.
      • Make sure you comb hair free of tangles (the Hair Trix Comb by BeautiMark is ideal).
      • Take a 1–1.5inch section of hair (smaller sections give you tighter curls, larger sections give you looser curls).
      • Gather hair in curling iron, smooth through to the ends, roll up towards weft.
      • Hold for 15-20 seconds, release curl into palm.
    2. CLIP
      • Hold the curl in one hand, gather up towards the base and clip it in place.
    3. COOL
      • Let hair cool completely before removing pin to effectively set the curl.
      • Hair can be combed using an appropriate comb.

Straighten Heat-Friendly Synthetic Hair with Flat Iron

Sexy glossy straight hair is super easy!

    1. Again, DO NOT style hair while on your head.
      • Use a canvas block or Styrofoam head to style your wig.
      • You can hold down your hair extensions on a table or hold it with your hand and style.
    2. Take a 1–1.5inch section, starting at least 2inches away from the base. Slowly smooth flat iron down towards end, follow with a comb to keep hair looking smoother.
    3. Continue through ends (2-3 times if needed).
    4. Allow hair to hang naturally to cool.

Getting your “wig-on” is all fun and games, however, for the fun to actually continue we have to take proper care of our wigs. Please refer to our Synthetic Hair Special Care page to learn how.

Own a convertible car? Like to walk on the beach? Feel like your wig is going to fly off in the wind?
Here are some great tips - straight from The Wig Experts!

    1) Try the Sure Grip by BeautiMark for lasting comfort and security.

    2) Try sewing toupee clips into the fabric wefting of your wig (not a monofilament or hand-tied wig). If you know how to use a needle and thread, you can do this! Just be careful and gentle. This will add extra security by fastening the wig to your own hair, just like hair extensions do.

Let's face it, we all sweat in the summer. If you like to wear long wigs, you may really be feeling the heat. How do you beat the heat? ...

Try braiding your wig. Simply pull the length of the wig to the side. Then braid the hair loosely, or affix a hair elastic every inch or so along the length. Advanced braiders can even try creating a fishtail plait; these look way more complicated than they actually are to do. Secure the braid or fishtail with a ribbon, hair elastic, or bobby pin.
And voila! This gets the hair off your neck. You’ll look summer sweet and nix the sticky wig caused by sweat!

MYTH: I have to wash my wig as often as I wash my own hair.

FACT: The general rule of thumb is wash every 7-10 wearings, but it depends on the environment and the amount of styling products you use. If you use styling products like the shaping creme or hairspray on your wig every day, you'll need to wash and revitalize your wig more often than those who do not use products. Also, if you live in a very rainy or humid climate, you may also need to wash your wig more often.

Because wigs do not have the benefit of natural oils like our own hair, the less you wash – the better! But wear your wig too long without washing it and it can look old and dingy. To refresh and wash your wigs (whether synthetic or human hair), use BeautiMark brand of shampoos, conditioners, and other styling products.

EEK! Don’t let this happen to you :

It’s summertime and Raquel Welch’s lace front doesn’t match her newly bronzed skin. Even wig divas like Raquel get it wrong sometimes, so no worries. How do you insure against this wig faux pas?...

TIP:  If you get a tan, your lace front should match! Try dabbing a damp tea bag onto the lace material so it dyes the lace of the wig to match. The more you dab, the darker the color. The pros have been doing this simple and easy trick for years! You can even have two lace front wigs - one to match your tan summer skintone and one to match your more pale winter skintone.
