Wigs have come a long way since your grandmother’s day! The new advancements in alternative hair technology come together to deliver the most contemporary styles making it impossible to tell the difference between a wig and natural hair.

But, before you consider style and color, it’s important to find the best cap to suit your needs so you can fully enjoy your wig.

    The Base

The wig cap or base, is the material the wig hairs are attached to. Newer caps are lighter and more durable to give you a more comfortable fit and a look that’s completely natural. There are four basic types of cap features you should be familiar with next time you’re looking for a wig. Each one has its particular advantages, and unique technique by which hair is attached.

    4 Types of Cap Features

    100% Hand-tied

Also known as 100% hand-knotted, these comfortable and lightweight caps are among the very best available. Each hair is individually hand-tied to the cap to create the most natural movement. This allows the hairs to move freely, and you get the added bonus of styling versatility which allows you to comb the hair in any direction. It has the softest and smoothest base which contours to the scalp, giving a near custom fit; ideal for sensitive scalps or hair loss.

    Monofilament

There are two types of monofilament tops:

    •  A full mono top allows for parting and styling versatility.
    •  A double mono top gives an extra layer of soft material for added comfort (perfect for sensitive skin or scalps).

This is a wonderful option that offers very natural hair growth from the scalp where the hair is parted. The monofilament can be found just at the crown, along a pre-defined part or across the full top of the wig. Similar to the 100% hand-tied caps, each hair is individually hand-tied to a sheer base (but not the entire cap).

    Lace front

These caps are more popular than ever! Once very expensive and found only on Hollywood productions, they are now much more accessible. Made of delicate materials that should be handled with care, the lace goes from temple-to-temple, or are extended from ear-to-ear and designed to blend in with a variety of skin tones. Each hair is individually tied to the cap, but like monofilament wigs (not to the entire cap).  This allows for styling the hair away from the face while maintaining the illusion of a natural front hair line. Most are ready-to-wear and don’t require tape or adhesive for attachment.

    Basic cap

These are the most durable and affordable wig caps. They include both cap-less and traditional constructions, identified by the open wefting in the cap for better air ventilation. A weft is a curtain of hair sewn onto the cap. The hair on these caps are pre-teased at the root to mask the cap beneath, which often gives the hair natural volume at the crown.

You may find that some styles incorporate more than one cap feature, some even vary by brand. Knowing about these cap features will help you choose wigs that are more comfortable and better suited for your needs.

Top pieces are a great solution for localized hair loss. The best top piece covers the affected area while delivering exceptional comfort. Identifying the nature and extent of your hair loss is the key to determining the right solution for your needs.

Stages of Hair Loss: The first step in determining what kind of coverage you need is to identify your stage of hair loss.

Stage I: Hair loss is in a diffused pattern on top of the head. Hair loss at this stage is noticeable, but minimal.
Stage II: Hair loss is more noticeable, and more of the scalp may be visible.
Stage III: At this stage hair loss is very noticeable, and the scalp is clearly visible.

Area of Hair Loss: The second step is to identify the location of hair loss.

Front/Fringe: Hair loss is localized at or near the front hair line.
Part: Hair loss is localized within the top of the scalp near the part or crown.
Top: Light to moderate hair loss localized at the top of the scalp near the part or the crown.
Crown: Hair loss is localized at or near the back of the scalp.
Diffused: Hair loss is localized at the top of the scalp and is spread through much of the area.
    Total/Complete: Complete loss of hair.

The Best Solution: The third step is to select the best type of coverage for your need.

Clip-in bangs/fringe are the perfect solution for thinning hair at the front hairline or temples.

Clip-in, volumizing hairpieces and extensions help you fill in thinning areas or fine hair. This is the ideal solution for hair loss localized within a smaller area of the head.

Clip-in top pieces with smaller bases work best for light to moderate hair loss at the top of the head near the part or crown.

Clip-in top pieces with larger bases are the solution for extensive hair loss at the top, crown, or more diffused stages of hair loss.

100% Hand-Tied & Double Monofilament Wigs are the ideal solution for complete hair loss and the preferred wigs by women with hair loss because of the smoother surface and comfortable caps which eliminate irritation and friction against the scalp.

Brought to you by the experts at:

1 in 4 women in the United States have some form of hair loss. Hair loss comes in many forms, from thin, fine hair at the front hairline to advanced diffused hair loss throughout. Not every woman is ready for a full system or wig; Jon Renau toppers are great for everything ranging from fashion to the mid-progressive stages of hair loss.

How to properly measure for a topper:
Follow these steps to determine the size of the area that needs coverage.

    1. Determine the area of hair loss
    2. Using a fabric measuring tape, measure area from front to back and record results
    3. Measure area from side to side and record results

Be sure to factor in clip attachments on base. There must be a sufficient amount of hair to attach clip to.

How to choose the right base:
Use the chart below to determine which topper is best for you. Be sure to check the “BASE DIMENSIONS” column for the proper base size, based on your measurements. Remember, the clips must attach in an area with a sufficient amount of hair.

    How to apply a topper:
Follow these steps to properly apply the topper you have chosen.

    1. Place over area of hair loss and check in the mirror for balance and style
    2. Apply front of topper about 1”-2” (2.5 - 5 cm) back from the natural hair line. Incorporate natural hairline (if available) for most natural look
    3. Secure front clip. Place hand on top of base to support as you secure the back clip(s), keeping base flat and taught against head. Do not pull when applying
    4. Secure side clips, keeping base flat and taught against head
    5. Blend topper with hair and style as desired

    TIP:
If there is no hair present at the clip attachment site, you can remove the clip and apply using adhesive (on polyurethane areas only)

Hair color gives the world insight into your personality. Making the right decision about color can be confusing, not to mention frustrating amidst a cluster of information that seems ever changing. In reality, the most flattering hair color for you is the one that accentuates your attributes to make you look natural.

*When the undertones of a wig are the same as the undertones of your complexion, the wig color will complement your skin giving you a natural and flattering look.

There are 2 parts to consider about your complexion to help you find the most flattering wig color for you: surface tone and undertone.

Surface tone is the color of your skin. Is it ivory, peachy, almond, bronze?

Undertone is the color your skin gives off under natural light.

2 Ways to Find Your Undertone

        1. Are your undertones warm or cool? Figuring this out will require objectivity since two people can have the same skin tone but different undertones. Consider a color wheel with six colors divided into two groups. On the left side are cool colors which are calm and soothing: green, blue, and violet. And on the right side are warm colors which are bright and vivid: yellow, orange and red. Does your skin give off a green, blue, and violet hue, or is it more yellow, orange and red?

        2. Roll up your sleeves! Under natural light, look at the veins on the inside of your wrists. Are they blue or green? If they look blue, you have cool undertones. If they look green your undertones are warm.

Now that you’re more familiar with your complexion, which color will look best on you?

Complexions with warm undertones will look best in a wig color with warm undertones like orangy reds, champagne, and golden blondes.

Hailey by Noriko | Color: Creamy-Toffee-R

Bailey by Rene of Paris | Color: Butter-Pecan

Complexions with cool undertones look best in wigs with cool undertones like pale blondes, ebony browns, and auburns.

Blake by Jon Renau | Color: 1B

Ivy by Noriko | Color: Ginger Brown
