Pantene Beautiful Lengths - National Donate Your Hair Day

When we heard about the first-ever nationwide call to chop off our locks for someone who has lost their hair to cancer treatments, we were happy to see the awareness reach a national level. We were ecstatic when we found out two employees from the Wigs.com family were willing to participate! Donating hair for wigs is a wonderful opportunity for us to give back and help those who need it the most. Participating is important to Wigs.com because we want to set an example by supporting the first national day designated to donate hair for wigs.

    National Donate Hair Day

Pantene and Seventeen Magazine teamed up to host this first national event which will benefit the Beautiful Lengths program. For those of you who don’t know, Beautiful Lengths is a partnership between Pantene and the American Cancer Society that encourages women (and men) to grow, cut and donate hair to make wigs for cancer patients. The hair donated today will be used to craft beautiful, high-quality wigs by HAIRUWEAR®. This company manufactures wigs for brands like Raquel Welch®, Gabor and Hairdo among many others.

    Why Donate Hair for Wigs?

As we all know, human hair doesn't grow on trees, so the demand for human hair wigs is extremely high - donating your hair is a great way to help those women in need. We encourage all of you to make the ‘kindest cut of all’ and help make a difference. So please, think about it & donate hair!

If your hair is too short at the moment (8 inches minimum), you have a whole year to grow it!

Donate Hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths FAQ’s

How long must my hair be to donate?

The ponytail must be at least 8 inches long (no maximum length). Although some charities will accept less than 8 inches, these ponytails cannot be used effectively to make a wig.

If your hair is wavy or curly, measure it when straight.

Can I donate dyed or color treated hair?

Pantene Beautiful Lengths requires “virgin” hair, this means hair that is free of permanent color, bleach or other chemical treatments such as Japanese straightening. Since each ponytail comes from a different person with a different shade of hair, it is important to absorb dyes at the same rate in order to create a wig of the same shade of color. Only virgin hair can be processed and then dyed to the same shade.

The same goes for gray hair – no more than 5% gray hair is recommended. It is harder to color and, once colored, fades more quickly.

Back in the olden days, lace only existed on your grandma’s dress. Nowadays lace is everywhere, even on wigs! Although lace is mainly known as a fabric to make clothing, this type of material has been included in the cap construction of wigs to create what are known as lace front wigs.

    What are lace front wigs?

Example of a Jon Renau lace front wig diagram

Wigs made with a thin sheer lace base at the hairline are called lace front wigs. This characteristic is important because it gives your wig a natural looking hairline. Not only does a lace front mimic natural hair growth at the hairline, but it also allows you to style the hair off the face without revealing the wig. This is what helps your wig look… well, not so wiggy. Although some wigs can be entirely made with lace, most generally only have the lace at the hairline, which can extend either from temple-to-temple or ear-to-ear.

Did you know that many wigs come with a ready-to-wear lace front wigs? Most people are intimidated by lace front wigs thinking they require a lot of time and preparation before wearing them. However, temple-to-temple ready to wear lace front wigs arrive precut out of the box. That means less time fussing with your wig and more time for fun! Think of ready-to-wear wigs like ready-to-wear fashion. They’re meant to be worn without any alterations.

Check out these frequently asked questions The Wig Experts have answered below.

    Lace Front Wigs FAQs

Can you see the lace front?

OK, first of all, the lace fabric used in wigs is not like your granny’s lace dress. The lace used is a sheer and fine net-like material that has a seamless barely-there appearance.

So don’t worry, you won’t be sporting a “vintage” looking wig.

Do I have to cut the lace on my wig?

The great thing about a temple-to-temple lace front wig is that they’re ready-to-wear – absolutely no cutting necessary! If you purchase an ear-to-ear (professional) lace front you will have to get it professionally cut. But most lace front wigs are ready-to-wear.

Tip: A lace front is extremely delicate so it should be handled with care. The lace should only be cut with pinking shears; cutting it with regular scissors could make the lace fray and unravel. Just say No, and let a professional help you! Take good care of your investment!!

Do you have to add tape or adhesive to the lace front wig?

All temple-to-temple lace front wigs come ready-to-wear.

Then how does the lace front wig stay on?

Wigs are designed with adjustable straps, which will adjust the cap into place. These straps (pull, Velcro or clip) help to flatten the lace front into place and won’t lift.

Note: An ear-to-ear lace front wig is normally known as a “professional lace front wig” because the lace extends 1-2 inches in length. Professional application is recommended to create a custom hairline, which can be secured with tape or adhesive. Read more about it here.

Do I have to apply makeup to the lace front wig?

Generally the lace front is sheer enough to where it will blend with your skin. However, if you have a darker skin tone you may have to apply a bit of foundation or powder to match to the color of your skin.

Tip: You can “dye” the lace front using a tea bag. Use a damp tea bag and dab onto the lace until you match it to your skin color. The more you dab the tea bag, the darker the color.
