Monofilament Top Wigs

Natural Appearance with Monofilament Top Wigs

When shopping for a wig, you’ve likely seen monofilament caps among your choices, and you can guess by the price that it’s an upgraded feature. So what exactly does it mean? Monofilament refers to the type of wig cap. Out of all of the wig options available, it offers the most realistic and natural appearance of scalp and hair movement possible.

Monofilament wigs are made by tying or sewing the hair in sections into the top portion of the cap, which is made from a very fine, sheer material known as the monofilament. The hairs are then hand-tied and knotted individually into a sheer material. This allows each of the tied hairs to be parted and brushed in any direction. Paired with a lace front, this gives the wig an impressively natural look. It will move just like your natural hair would!

Because of this time intensive process, monofilament wigs are considered to be a high quality product and more expensive than standard standard wefted caps.

Monofilament Top Wigs FAQs

  • The monofilament in a wig is a sheer material where hairs are either tied by hand or sewn in sections into the top portion of the cap. Because the material is see-through, it allows the color of your scalp to show through for a natural look. A monofilament top wig offers parting and styling versatility because you can move the hair in any direction.
  • Monofilament can be found across the full top of the wig cap, at the pre-determined part, or at the crown.
  • A double monofilament top has an extra soft layer for added comfort and are an amazing option for sensitive scalps.

Monofilament wigs have many great advantages:

  • They look very natural.
  • A full monofilament top can be brushed or parted in any direction.
  • They create the appearance of hairs growing from the scalp wherever the hair is parted.

The main disadvantage of a monofilament wig is cost. Monofilament wigs are considered high quality wigs and can be pricey because of the extensive time and process it takes to sew or tie the hairs into the cap.

The lifespan of your monofilament wig depends on what hair fiber it's designed with and how good you take care of it. If your monofilament wig is made with synthetic hair, it'll last up to 3-6 months. However, if your monofilament wig is made with human hair, it'll last up to 6-12 months.

  • Wash your wig every 6-8 wears. When you wash your wig, remember not to soak it or put conditioner on the roots. You'll untangle the knots holding the hair in place.
  • When you're not wearing your wig, place it on a wig stand. You can also store it safely in its wig box for long term storage.
  • Be sure to detangle the wig hair often with a wide tooth comb. Also, be sure to use a detangling spray for synthetic fibers.
  • Use styling and care products specially made for wigs and formulated for each fiber, especially shampoos and conditioners.

The main difference between a monofilament wig and lace wig are what materials the caps on these wigs are made of. While either one can have hairs sewn or hand tied into the caps, the material plays a factor in realism and comfort.

  • A monofilament wig is made with sheer material that gives the appearance of hair growing through the scalp when the hair is parted.
  • A lace wig creates the illusion of hair growth at the hairline. Some wigs even have lace parts that allows your scalp to show through, similar to a monofilament part. The lace is nude colored and see-through to seamlessly blend in with your skin tone. An added benefit to a lace wig is that it's breathable.
  • It's important to note that monofilament wigs can also have a lace front.
