My First Wig . . . What to Look For!

How Do I Choose a Good Wig?

When buying your first wig there are some important factors to consider:

  1. Hair Type – You have two basic choices, Human Hair or Synthetic Hair.  Both have their advantages but Human: feels better and lasts longer.  You will have to restyle it just like you would your natural hair… and human hair wigs are pricey.  Synthetic hair is much more affordable and you will not have to restyle as the style is permanently set in to the wig.  It is generally lighter weight too.  So if you have the budget and the time to restyle daily and want the best… go with human hair.  Otherwise, synthetic hair is a great choice as it is hard to tell the difference with a good quality synthetic fiber that it is not human hair.  Or, you can do what I do… have a great human hair for special occasions and synthetic wigs for daily wear!

  2. Cap Construction – for the most natural look, make sure to get a lace front and monofilament top wig.  This means the hair will look like it is growing right out of your own head and gives the most realistic look and movement.  Of course, if your budget doesn’t allow, you can look to wigs that are constructed with a basic cap and you can make them work too, but this is our recommendation to get the best result from your first wig.

  3. Style and Color – when buying your first wig, it is best to stick with a style and color that is closest to what you are currently comfortable and familiar with. No matter how wonderfully natural any wig looks…when you put it on, you will feel like it looks fake and wrong! This is only because you have on perfect hair! If you are putting your wig on properly and it is set on your forehead where your natural hairline goes...it will look very natural but you will have to get used to the new you!  some tips for color… go with a rooted or highlighted color that shows depth. Solid colors tend to look fake and flat. However, once you are comfortable with your first wig… venture out and try new styles and colors. You will be surprised at how versatile you can go!

You now have enough info to find your first wig.  You are set up for success!  Please keep the following “what not to do” tips:

Don’t wear a wig straight from the package. Make sure to wash or style it before wearing.

Don’t go too bulky at the crown. It’s like wearing a shirt that says “Hey, I’m wearing a wig”

Don’t give up after only wearing it once!  Wear it around your house first. Go outside and look at it in different lighting.  Keep in mind, those who know and love you will react as if you have an alien sitting on your head because they see you every day and you will look so different.  Best to warn them to curb that reaction for a smoother transition.
