Tips for Caring for Your Wig in Winter

Winter is here which means frigid temperatures, snowstorms, coats and scarves. With the season's challenges, your wig care routine becomes more important than ever. Thankfully, taking a few extra steps to protect your wig can help you have great hair days during the holiday season. Here are our top tips for caring for your wig in winter to keep your wig looking its best.

How to Protect Your Wig in Winter

#1 Don’t Skip the Conditioner

Whether it’s a leave-in conditioner for your synthetic wig or a deep conditioning treatment on your human hair wig, this step in your hair care routine is especially important to create a protective barrier and lock in moisture during the colder, dryer months. Not only will conditioning the fibers help protect the fibers, but washing overall with shampoo and conditioner will help keep your wig fresh and fabulous.

Please Note: Wash your wig every 6-8 wears with products specially formulated for your wig’s fiber type.

#2 Make Sure Your Wig is Completely Dry After Washing

Whenever you finish washing your wig, ensure your wig is completely dry before going outside. If the hair fibers are still wet (or even a little damp), the cold weather can make the strands brittle.

If you’re drying a synthetic wig, we recommend blotting the hair with a towel to remove any excess water. Then, take a wide tooth comb to gently part the hair and place your wig on a folding wig stand to air dry. (If your wig is made with human hair, blow the strands dry about 80% then round brush until smooth).

#3 Detangle Often

Scarves and coats cause extra friction and tangling, especially with longer wigs. Keep a wide tooth comb and travel-size detangling spray in your bag, and remember to detangle throughout the day. Be sure to concentrate on the nape of your wig where it’s more prone to tangling.

#4 Use Protective Styles

Another option you can do to prevent your wig from tangling is to put the hair up into protective styles. You can do a low ponytail or bun, braids, or even clip it up. These protective hairdos will help reduce friction frizz and give you a stylish new look.

#5 Cover Up

If you plan on spending a significant amount of time outdoors (or more than just a quick dash to your car), cover and protect your hair. Whether it’s an umbrella, a soft scarf or a loose hat with your hair carefully tucked underneath, protecting your hair from the elements while you’re getting from A to B is the goal.

The air in your home can be just as dry as the air outside. You can cover your wig with a satin scarf or pillow to help prevent the hair fibers from drying out and retain their softness.

#6 Use a Serum

If you have a human hair wig, a great way to protect it is by using a hair serum. Not only will it keep the hair fibers looking lustrous, but it’ll also help minimize any frizzing and lock in the moisture.

Please Note:  Like with bio hair, products can build up over time and cause your wig’s fibers to become limp. To prevent this from happening, please follow the wash time frame recommended above.

#7 Avoid Excessive Heat Styling

Limit your use of straighteners, blow dryers, and curling irons as much as you can. Regardless if you own a human hair or heat friendly synthetic wig, using too much heat on the hair will not only dry out the fibers but will also damage the hair. Instead, we recommend having two of the same style with one option to keep straight and the other option wavy/curly to avoid too much heat styling.

Please Note: Always use the heat temperature setting recommended by the brand manufacturer.  If you do use heat tools on human hair, use a heat protection spray

Protect Your Scalp

Caring for your scalp is essential, especially in colder months. Wash your scalp regularly to remove buildup. Don’t forget to moisturize your scalp to avoid dry skin. To stay warm and comfortable, consider wearing a soft, breathable wig cap under your wig. Not only does it provide insulation but also creates a smooth base for your wig to sit securely. For extra warmth and comfort, explore double monofilament wigs or opt for medium to heavy-density wigs.

Final Thoughts

With a little extra care and attention, you can keep your wig looking vibrant, smooth, and healthy all season long. By using these simple wig care tips for winter, you’ll keep your style looking stunning and ready for every occasion. Now you can stay cozy, stylish, and confident, no matter how chilly it gets outside.
