What causes Hair Loss?

Hair loss is unique to each person and there are different levels of hair loss that both men and women can experience. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the average person loses anywhere from 50 to 100 strands of hair each day - sometimes even 250 strands on hair washing days. But, hair loss becomes noticeable when the rate of shedding exceeds the rate of regrowth or when regrowth is thinner than previous.

Although anyone can experience hair loss, women make up 40% of American hair loss sufferers -- 1 in 4 women in the U.S. (source: American Hair Loss Association). It may not be uncommon, but it can be upsetting. Hair loss can be temporary or permanent and can be caused from a variety of sources such as genetics, prescription medications, anemia, pregnancy, stress, diet, cancer treatments, and more. Unless you've experienced hair loss first-hand, it can be difficult to grasp the emotional toll it can take. For many of us, hair can be a surprisingly important part of our identity and for women, our sense of femininity.

Ambassador Hair Loss Stories

Jenna's Experience with Hair Loss

"I had struggled with baby fine, thin hair my whole life. As a teenager, I had a couple spells of alopecia, and I remember just how defeating it felt. It was just so embarrassing to me….It wasn’t until I put on a great wig for the first time that I felt confident. But also felt like I had control of something that had held me back for so long. And a great wig will do it."

Kristyna's Experience with Hair Loss

"I first started losing my hair in my early 20s due to my Sjögren's and discoid lupus. It got worse over the years to the point I could no longer hide it anymore... I went down the rabbit hole of wigs and decided to try one out. It was the best decision I ever made in my life. I am so incredibly grateful for hair like this now…I am grateful for the freedom and confidence wigs have given me."

Eileen's Experience with Hair Loss

"Over 10 years ago, breast cancer changed my life forever. And of course losing my hair was a huge part of that journey. Wigs help me walk back into the world, feeling myself again, feeling confident and beautiful again, and I can go out into the world and not worry about my hair and worry about living my life. Today I wear wigs, not because I have to, but because I want to."

Mel B's Experience with Hair Loss

"Since I was 39, I found myself in the ER, my body was failing, there were multiple things that were wrong with me. Since then, my hair had been just falling out...I was like, “I have to do something...I don’t want to be a prisoner at home. I got a wig – my very first one. Then, it became something I fell in love with."
