About Jen Brown

Wigs.com: Tell us about yourself and how your journey with hair loss persuaded you to be such an inspiration in the hair loss community.

Jen Brown: "My name is Jen Brown, and I am a stay at home mom of two. I have antigenic alopecia and always knew my hair would fall out. I just never knew it would start falling out in my early 20s. I remember that time in my life. I felt really isolated and alone, like nobody else could relate to me. That isolation ended up leading me into a depression over my hair loss."

"One night I was scrolling Instagram and stumbled upon a woman wearing a wig. I remember I was so shocked that they could even look that realistic or good, as I had preconceived notions about what a wig it was supposed to look like. I ordered my first wig online and started wearing it a few days later. I knew I wanted to be open and honest with my friends and family around me about my hair loss, and the fact I started wearing wigs. I didn't want it to be this big secret or something I was shameful or hiding about. I decided to make a post on social media with a picture of me and my new wig for my friends and family to see. At the time, I had no social media following, and I was absolutely terrified to hit upload."

"That one act of courage changed the trajectory of my whole life. For the first time, I realized there were so many women around me that also struggled with hair loss. And, for the first time in a long time, I didn't feel so alone. This really prompted my desire to make content online and to help normalize the conversation around wigs and hairloss. I've now been making content for five years and absolutely love what I get to do. I love getting to 'meet' women from all around the world with their own unique stories of inspiration as they navigate the world of hair loss."

Finding Confidence with Wigs

Wigs.com: How has wearing wigs influenced your confidence or other areas of your life?

Jen Brown: "Before wearing wigs, I was a shell of the person people see online today. I was very self-conscious and shameful of my hair loss, often wearing hats to conceal and hide. Wigs opened up a whole new world for me, not only allowing me to experiment with different styles or colors, but also allowed me to see that I could be confident again alongside my hair loss. For me, that confidence looks like my wigs."

Jen Brown's Advice For New Wig Wearers

Wigs.com: What advice would you give to yourself at the beginning of your wig wearing journey?

Jen Brown: "I always tell women to have grace for themselves as navigating hair loss is a marathon, not a sprint. Some days you'll feel like you are on top of a mountain and can conquer anything. Other days you'll feel the depths of despair as you navigate the grief of what you lost. More than anything, I want women to know they are not alone and even if they don't have a circle of wig sisters in their everyday lives, they always have one online."

"My best advice I was ever given myself for navigating the grief of hair loss what's to allow yourself five or 10 minutes a day to feel however you need to feel. Whether that's crying, screaming, being thankful, whatever you need to feel. Give yourself that time to truly feel it and sit with it. Then, after your timer is up, pack it away mentally to revisit it the next day. This advice helped me immensely in processing my hair loss and not dwelling on it constantly. Much to my surprise, the amount of time I needed to spend thinking about my hair loss [each day] got less and less."

Wigs.com: What is the biggest challenge with wearing wigs?

Jen Brown: "This is going to be a funny answer, but I'm five years into wearing wigs, and, at this point, the biggest challenge I face is trying to decide what wig or style to wear for that day! LOL! I oftentimes match my hair to my outfit like an accessory, and it can get hard to decide the right one!"

"But if I put myself back to the beginning of my wig wearing journey, my biggest challenge was leaving the house for the first time. I was absolutely terrified to see my friends and family in public."

Wigs.com: What do you love most about wearing wigs?

Jen Brown: "I love the confidence it has given me. I never expected what I once was most ashamed of would turn into the thing I was most proud of. I absolutely love wearing wigs, and often times tell people, even if my hair did grow back, I would still continue to wear my wigs. I love the ability to change out my hair color and style every single day. (Sometimes multiple times a day!)"

"The second thing I love about wearing wigs is the fact that is giving me such a strong community of women to look up to around me. Even though those women are all across the world, we communicate daily with the shared experience of hair loss connecting us. That shared experience has connected me to women in a way that I never anticipated. Some of my closest friends are in the hair loss community, and I'm immensely grateful for the community that surrounds me online."
