Why is my lace front itchy?

Lace front wigs are beloved for their realistic hairline, natural appearance, and styling versatility. However, a common concern among wig wearers is experiencing discomfort and irritation from the lace front. This issue can be caused by different factors, such as having the wrong size, skin sensitivities, or low-quality cap construction. We’ll go over the reasons your lace front is itchy and share a few tips on how to prevent it.

Reasons Why Your Lace Front Is Itchy

1. You Have the Wrong Cap Size

When a wig is too large or too small, the lace front can press or rub against the skin. Either way, it’s uncomfortable! Measuring your head will help you to pick the right cap size. If you’re in between sizes, try a 100% hand tied wig. The caps stretch to accommodate your head shape for a snug and comfortable fit.

2. The Wig Isn’t Secure on Your Head.

If your wig is still not staying in place after you find your cap size, adjust the fit with the adjustable tabs in the back or use wig tape. Not only does it keep your wig from slipping or rubbing, but the tape helps create a barrier between the lace and your skin. Gently take off your wig at the end of the day to avoid damaging the lace front.

Pro Tip: Use an adhesive remover like Lace Release by Walker Tape.

3. The Lace Front is Low Quality.

Low-quality lace front wigs are often made with inexpensive materials that can irritate the skin and feel uncomfortable with extended wear. However, higher quality lace front wigs are crafted with soft, breathable materials for a more comfortable feel. They also typically have smaller knots where the hair or fibers are tied to the lace, creating a more natural-looking hairline.

4. You May Have Sensitive Skin.

If you’re more prone to skin sensitivity, the lace front may cause some discomfort. Try out different types of lace fronts from various wig brands to find the right one for you.

Please Note: Seek professional help from a dermatologist if irritation persists.

5. The Lace Front May Be Damaged

The lace front can get damaged over time from extended use or improper handling. If you notice your lace front has been damaged, take your wig to a salon professional to fix it.

6. You Need to Wash Your Wig

Sweat, oils, and make up can build up in the cap and lace front, which can lead to skin irritation and breakouts along the hairline. Therefore, it’s important to wash your wig every 6 to 8 wears to keep it fresh and clean.

Final Thoughts

Staying comfortable in your lace front wig starts with choosing the right fit, investing in quality construction, and making sure it’s properly secured. By measuring your head for the correct cap size, opting for well-crafted, breathable lace, and using the right adhesive products, you can prevent irritation before it begins. A lace front should enhance your look—not distract you with discomfort. With a few simple adjustments, you can enjoy a flawless, natural appearance that feels just as good as it looks.
