Why doesn't my wig look like the picture?

July 20th, 2023

Have you ever ordered a wig online and felt let down when it didn't look like the pictures that convinced you to purchase it? Manufacturers typically alter wigs a bit to achieve the looks you see on their models. In other words, wigs rarely look perfect right out of the box but don’t worry, we’ll share their secrets…

1. Wash your wig

Wigs sometimes have “box hair” which just means it has kinks or bends in the fiber that compromise the silhouette. Water helps the fiber relax on synthetics and also gives you a blank canvas to start with on human hair. Wash and allow your synthetic wig to air dry on a wig stand. Human hair should be blow dried after it’s washed

2. Heat style it

Bring out the hot tools for heat-friendly and human hair wigs! Create beachy waves with a curling wand or super smooth tresses with a flat iron. Watch our video tutorials with styling tips for human hair and heat-friendly fibers.

3. Dull the shine

Get rid of any unwanted shine with a little dry shampoo. Be sure to use dark dry shampoo for darker wigs otherwise you’ll see white residue. One of our favorite brands is Batiste!

5. Consider customizations

Don’t be afraid to alter your wig if the bangs are a smidge too long or the hairline needs some baby hairs trimmed in. Just be sure to take it to a professional stylist who works with wigs!
With some styling and customization, you can make your wig look just like the images that made you fall in love with it. For more styling tips, check out our Wig 101/How-To Videos playlist on Youtube!

4. Wear makeup

We can’t tell you how important it is to try on new styles when you have your makeup on! Models are ALWAYS done up, whether it’s a smokey eye or more subtle, golden glow. Foundation and powder can also help to conceal your lace front or create a more natural part where darker knots might be visible.

5. Consider customizations
