Do I Need to Wear a Wig Cap Under a Wig?

Many wig-wearers go back and forth on whether or not they need to wear a wig cap under a wig. We recommend wearing a wig cap because they offer many benefits, such as: preventing skin irritation, keeping your bio hair tucked up, protecting your scalp from your wig, and preventing sweat and oils from building up in the cap. However, some people find wearing a wig cap too hot or experience discomfort from wearing one. If you are on the fence about wearing a wig cap underneath your wig, we hope this blog can help you decide which is best for you.

Choosing Your Wig Cap

If you decide to wear a wig cap under a wig, it’s important to know the different materials and colors wig caps and liners come in. Each type plays a role in comfort and keeping your hair wig securely in place.

Types of Wig Caps

Nylon - A nylon wig cap is made with a similar material to stockings and pantyhose. They also help protect your head against the wig. However, it may cause slippage and can be challenging to wear with biological hair.

Bamboo Viscose - Wig caps made with bamboo from viscose are great for sensitive scalps. The breathable material is super soft for amazing comfort and also provides a barrier between your head and wig. These wig caps are also washable, so you can get multiple uses from them.

Cotton - Cotton wig caps are another option for sensitive scalps. The lightweight material is soft and breathable for optimal comfort. Like with the bamboo from viscose wig caps, you can also wash these as well.

Mesh - Mesh wig caps are a great option for wearing wigs with biological hair. They are made with a stretchy fishnet material that will help keep hair tucked under the wig. They allow more air to flow to your scalp, too!

Colors

Even though a wig cap is hidden under your wig, it's important to match its color closely with your natural hair or scalp tone, especially if your wig has monofilament. Monofilament is a see-through material that you can see to your scalp. If your wig cap isn’t a similar color to your bio hair or scalp, there will be a noticeable line of where your cap begins.

Try to find a wig cap that resembles your bio hair and/or scalp color, so it blends underneath your wig. For example, if your skin or bio hair is dark, choose a dark colored wig cap.

How to Prepare Your Biological Hair for a Wig Cap

When tucking bio hair in a wig cap, there are a few methods that will keep hair securely in place.

Braid Method - If you have longer hair, you may want to use the braid method to help hide your hair. This technique helps break up the bulk of your hair to prevent any lumps or bumps on your wig. Separate your hair into two sections and braid them. (If your hair is thicker, you may want to start with four sections.) Wrap them around your head and use bobby pins to keep them securely in place.

Wrap Method - If you have shorter hair, you can try the wrap method. Take your hair and twist it up in the back. Secure your hair with a clip or bobby pins to keep it in place.

Ponytail Method - You may have seen some people use the ponytail when putting up their hair. This technique works better if you have thin hair. The key is to make sure your hair is as flat against the skull as possible to eliminate any bulges or lumps.

How to Put on a Wig Cap

To put on the wig cap, start at the nape area, and pull it forward to the forehead. This is the best way to control the hair. Once you get the wig cap in place, if you find any hair that has been left out, tuck it under the wig cap. Criss-crossing the bobby pins along the hairline, usually at the temples, will give a better hold and help to secure your cap and hair all day long.

Can I Wear a Wig Without a Wig Cap?

You do not need to wear a wig cap under a wig if you find wig caps and liners uncomfortable. Ensure you wash your scalp regularly with a good shampoo to prevent buildup and potential breakouts.

For extra security, you can also wear a wig gripper, like Amy Gibson’s WigSECURE Crystal and BeautiMark’s Sure Grip. They are designed to sit behind your hairline and keep your wig securely (and comfortably) in place.

Final Thoughts

If you’re trying to decide if you need to wear a wig cap under a wig, the choice is ultimately up to you! Wig caps serve as an extra layer of protection and give added security for everyday wearing. It can be hard to choose which is best for you. If a wig cap helps keep your scalp comfortable from everyday wear - this may be just what you need!
