Swimmer's Guide to Hair Care

Swimmer's Guide to Hair Care

One of the best things about summer is the fact that laying by a pool for hours on end is not only acceptable, but encouraged. For many year round swimmers, this is best time of year - but not necessarily for your hair. Because we begin to live in the water, the regular hair care may not be enough to keep your hair soft and healthy. Between the water and the constant exposure to sun rays, this season can do a number on your hair if you aren’t prepared.

Hair Care for Swimming

But don’t fret! There are simple things you can do to not only keep your hair healthy, but that are easy to build into your routine! Below are a list of five products that have been my godsend after living in Texas and dealing with many a hot summer.

Find a Pre-Swim Conditioner

This may seem a bit ridiculous or unorthodox, but using a gentle protector before you get in the chlorine/salt water pools this summer, comb it through your strands from crown to ends to coat your locks with some plant-based polymers that help protect against drying pool chemicals. Typically these types of products are from children’s lines and are often very inexpensive and perfect for anyone’s summer swim bag.

Use a Clarifying Shampoo once you leave the water

For anyone who has oily or buildup prone hair, this step will come as no surprise. By using a clarifying shampoo rinsing out stubborn chlorine and other chemicals, dirt or impurities, you can protect your hair by creating a clean base for the next step: moisturizing.

Find a moisturizing leave-in conditioner

Having perpetual exposure to harsh pool chemicals can leave your hair dry and damaged - regardless if it saltwater or chlorine - so give your strands some extra love this season by utilizing a hydrating conditioner everyday. This is a step that should not be repeated year round; and if you are experiencing any buildup or excess oil dial it back to every other day or 3-4 times a week. Using a deep conditioner will help to bring back moisture and protein and vitamins so your locks will be stronger than ever and less prone to future damage.

Hair protecting spray

Use a UV protection spray for those days you are going to be in the sun longer than normal.

The best thing you can do for your hair this summer is to protect your strands against harmful UV rays. Find a spray that not only protects against UV rays but also protects against frizz and adds a bit of a shine.

Add a hair mask to your routine.

This is for those whose hair is a bit more run down than just the everyday summer damage. If you’re ready for some serious hair repair, this is a fast and easy step to add to any routine. You are gonna want to find a hair mask that combats damage while still giving you the moisture and shine you desire. This is the perfect way to fix pool damaged hair and should be added into your routine 1-3 times a week based on your need.
