Can You Cook with a Synthetic Wig On?

With the holidays around the corner, you may be wondering if you can cook with a synthetic wig on, especially if it’s made with non-heat friendly fibers. While heat from kitchen appliances can damage regular synthetic wigs, there are some steps you can take to prevent kitchen mishaps.

Tips for Cooking with a Wig On

Roxie shares helpful tips on how to protect your wig while cooking.

Distance Yourself: If you’re cooking over a stove, avoid standing directly over the pots and pans, especially if they’re uncovered. Instead, keep within an arm’s length of the stovetop to avoid the steam scorching your wig.

Wear a Heat-Friendly Wig: These fibers are designed to withstand heat (to a certain degree of course) and are a much safer option in the kitchen.

Opt for a Shorter Style: The likelihood of heat damage is a lot lower when you’re wearing a short wig versus a long, layered style. You won’t risk dipping your hair into a pot of boiling water or catching on an oven rack.

Put Up Your Hair:  Tie or clip your hair back and away from your face. This will keep stray strands from escaping and burning from the heat.

Cover Your Wig: Wear a hat, scarf, or a stretchy headband to cover the front portion of your wig and keep your locks from getting loose.

Have a Backup: Accidents happen, and you wouldn’t want to ruin your favorite hairstyle from a kitchen mishap. Consider investing in a wig specifically reserved for cooking.

Wash Your Wig: Cooking around strong smells (such as onions or garlic) can cause the odors to get trapped in the fibers. Be sure to wash your wig with specially formulated shampoo designed for its fiber type to keep it smelling fresh and clean.

Freshen Up Your Wig. If you’re traveling and don’t have time to clean a wig, use Beautimark’s Purifi Spray to help get rid of any odors.

Take Off Your Wig. Consider removing your wig while cooking, if you feel comfortable doing so. Try a soft hat or breathable headscarf to protect your scalp from warmth and potential splashes.

Cook With Caution

Remember to exercise caution when you cook with a synthetic wig on. When you’re wearing your favorite hairstyle while opening an oven or cooking over a stove, the heat may singe (or burn) the wig’s fibers, causing irreversible damage. However, with a little extra care and preparation, holiday cooking can be a breeze. With these tips, you’ll be ready to whip up delicious feasts while looking fabulous—no singed strands in sight! Happy cooking!
