Can I Swim With a Wig On?

With the rising temperatures, a great way to beat the heat is  splashing around with your family and friends at the pool or  ocean. However, if you’re new to wigs, you may be wondering  if you can swim with a wig on. While we do not recommend  swimming with your wig, if leaving it on is a must, we'll share  some tips on how you can protect your wig.

10 Tips For Swimming With Your Wig

Avoid Submerging Your Head. Full submersion in the water can potentially damage your wig. Plus, the cap will be more noticeable!

Opt for Synthetic Wigs. Choose a wig made with synthetic hair because the fibers will still hold its shape, even after getting wet.

Choose a Shorter Style. Select styles that sit above the shoulders, such as: pixies, bobs, and medium-length wigs. Not only will it prevent the hair from getting wet, but  it will be cooler for your scalp, too!

Style the Hair. For longer wigs, pull the hair back into a low ponytail or bun. Or clip it up.

Wear a Swim Cap. If you’re planning a full dunk into the water, consider wearing a swim cap. Ensure that the fit is snug, so that no hair escapes.

Have a Secure Fit. To keep your wig firmly in place, adjust the fit with the Velcro tabs or adjusters in the back. Use a little bit of adhesive or a wig grip for extra security.

Get a Separate Wig for Swimming. Having a  designated “swim wig” will help keep your other favorite hairstyles safe.

Let Your Wig Dry. Wait to comb or brush your wig until the hair is dry. This will help prevent tension on the fiber and reduce shedding.

Maintain Your Wig. Be sure to use a detangler or conditioning spray to smooth out the hair and get rid of any stubborn knots. Use a wide tooth comb while detangling and use gentle strokes from ends to roots.

Cleanse & Moisturize Your Wig. Always wash and condition your wig soon after taking a dip in the pool or ocean. Human hair wigs are especially susceptible to  drying out after exposure to chlorine and salt water, and will need a deep conditioning treatment with a quality hydrating conditioner.

Remain Precautious

Be careful when swimming with a wig on. The water can cause tangling and matting, which leads to shedding, frizzed  fiber, and possibly even damage to the cap. While it’s best not to take your wig for a plunge, if it’s unavoidable, be sure to remember these tips.
