How To Put In Hair Extensions

Hair Extensions and How To Apply Them

Extensions can make all the difference in how you feel about your hair.  Looking for volume, length, or maybe both but not sure how to achieve the look you want?  Extensions can make all the difference.  There is a solution for any need you may have.  Extensions come in several lengths and there are different number of pieces to get the looks you want.  You can add anywhere from one to 10 pieces (also called wefts as they are varying lengths of hair sewn in to curtains of hair).  You can make your hair exactly like you want it but there are a few things you should know in order to get the best results.

Hair extensions come in both human hair and synthetic hair, Of course, human hair extensions are the best because you have the freedom to style them any way you like and the feel... well... totally natural! The style-ability allows you to perfectly blend in the human hair clip in extensions to your natural hair texture and or curl pattern.

However, not all of us can afford human hair extensions.  But, this doesn't mean you can't have great hair too! With synthetic hair extensions you don't have quite the styling versatility you have with human hair but you can get great hair all the same.

Some of us only need one piece to make the difference we are looking for.  Clipping in bangs, or a top piece, or even one volume piece across the back for fuller but not longer look may be all you need or want.  However, for our purpose here, we are going to address the full clip in hair extensions kit for the all over lengthening and for volume.

Don't Fall Prey to The Dead Giveaway

Of course, the reason we want extensions is usually because we have shorter hair and would like it longer and or fuller.  But don't forget the number one dead giveaway you are wearing extensions are those little short pieces of hair that stick out on the underneath side of the extensions! They will show your true hair length.  Follow this easy trick to make sure no one see the true length of your hair while you're wearing extensions.

Take a small section (about 1-2 finger lengths and part it horizontally) and twist it until it is completely rolled up.  Now tuck it up horizontally and pin it flat to the back of your head.  These short pieces will be invisible from underneath when you are wearing the extensions...Now you are ready to apply your extensions.

Once you have that first layer of short hairs pinned up, it should be enough to hide all the shorties... but if you still have some sticking out... you may have to do two layers of rolling and pinning to get all the desired look.

So NOW... you are ready to get your extensions in!  We suggest you make sure they are styled like you want and they are snarl/tangle free.  So brush/wide tooth comb them out first and then style them anyway you like.  You may want to wait and put in all your extensions before styling. That can work too!

In every kit, you will have some wefts which are wider than others.  When clipping in your first layer of hair/wefts. Start at the bottom and start with the narrow weft first. Clip in the first wefts at the bottom of your head as this is the narrowest part of your head.

Next…work your way up the back of your head using the two wider wefts next (as this follows the natural shape of your head).

Make sure to clip in to your hair just a tad bit away from the scalp so you have freedom of movement & nothing is digging in to your scalp.  It makes wearing your extensions all day so much more comfortable.

If your hair is fine and you need added security, you can slightly tease/or backcomb your hair at the root. The clips will attach and stay a little more securely this way.

Depending on the kit you have, there will be small single or double clip wefts for the sides of your hair.  Place those in to fit your needs and your part…you may even find you don’t want to use them at all.

You may want a ton of hair and choose to use two kits! This is a major glam look and gives you super full hair.  You get to choose the level of fullness with the clip in extension kit.  That is the beauty of being able to customize the kit to suit you.

Just like you don't want the short hair to show at the bottom/underneath the hair... you don't want the weft seams of your clip in extensions to show through at the top of your head.  if the wefts are too far up, you will be able to see the seams when the hair parts at the top. To be safe... make sure not to clip any wefts on the top area or any place forward or above the top of the ears.  This will ensure your wefts are unnoticeable.

If you have thicker hair to start or want a much thicker Glam look… you will use all your wefts. You can choose a kit which contains up to 10 wefts.  Some days you may want to go for the more Natural look but still be long and full… you can always put less wefts in.

Just remember to always start at the bottom and hide your short hairs underneath. You would just space out the wefts a bit more and use less hair…. But you will still look amazing!
