What Products Are Safe To Use On My Wig?

I will be honest: when I first started wearing wigs, I thought that using regular shampoo and conditioner on the wigs was the way to keep them nice. Though this might have worked on human hair wigs - though that is not ideal and not suggested - it was probably the worst thing I could have done to my blended or synthetic wigs. After much trial and error with wig products, I've become partial to the BeautiMark line.

Safe wig care products

Whether you use BeautiMark or use this as a guide when exploring other options, below are some things you need to know when looking for care products. (Important Note: no synthetic washes on human hair, but human hair washes are safe for synthetic)

The Type of Products You Use Depends On The Material of Your Wig

Much like with anything else, do your research before you buy! Whether that's on YouTube, watching tutorials from influencers who are well versed in wig care, or looking into ingredient lists, there's nothing wrong with analyzing the options before you invest. Here is one thing I will say about products for human hair: if you wouldn’t put it on your head, don’t put it on your wig. At the first sign of parabens, run the opposite direction.

Can You Wash A Human Hair Wig With Regular Shampoo?

You can wash a human hair wig with regular shampoo for human hair, however you cannot wash a synthetic wig with regular shampoo. Nor should you wash a human hair wig with shampoo designed for synthetic wigs. There are many other factors to consider when choosing the best shampoo for your wig. Certain chemicals can be toxic to human hair so we recommend doing your research when choosing products.

Luckily, we have exactly what you need here at wigs.com! The synthetic bundle is great for your specific needs and the human hair care bundle can be used on wigs and natural hair! For anyone that's just starting out on their wig journey, these lines are the perfect place to start. They come with multiple products from cleansing to moisturizing to styling and are equipped with great instructions and an easy to implement routine.

No matter what products you use, remember that you are going to need to carve out time to care for your wigs. No matter what products you use, if you don’t take the time, you will not find your wig in the same condition it was before.

Wig Expert Tips

I will leave you with what I consider to be the five cardinal rules of wig care: 1) be gentle. Ripping and tearing at the wig to try to comb through it can actually weaken the bonds. 2) Avoid combing while wet, as this can also loosen bonds and cause serious damage to the wig cap. 3) Use a wig mate to dry it properly. This means allowing it to dry on a wig head stand (preferably one that allows for air to flow through that won’t retain any excess moisture.

4) Avoid wringing your wig out like you might a towel. And finally, 5) It isn't recommended to wash a wig every time it is worn. You can use a spray to refresh it, but we recommend washing your wig every 8 to 10 wears.
