Wigs - What Your Stylist Isn't Telling You!

Posted on October 17 2018

I’m going to let you in on a little secret of why it’s so important for us to continue our education on wigs and hair pieces: Wigs are a hair salon’s biggest competition! So unless you have a wig stylist, professionals in the beauty industry will keep their lips zipped when it comes to alternative hair, and they aren't likely to want to keep you informed on the subject.

When I worked in the beauty shop, the last thing I would want to tell my clients is that they should go buy a wig to incorporate in their styling routine. I would be out of a job! Here are some of the reasons wigs give hair salons and bio-hair beauticians a run for their money, and what alternative hair can do that your stylist can’t!

Ready To Wear Hair

You can do it all by yourself. With so many wig options that are ready to wear out of the box, there is no lengthy cut, color, blow dry and style process needed to get the look you want. If you’re anything like me and have a love affair with the snooze button, go ahead and give yourself an extra 30 minutes to an hour to sleep in because you can be flawless in 10 minutes or less when you’re a wig wearer! Hairstylists know that if they clue their clients in on this serious life hack, their chair will be empty all day. Can you say starving artist?

The Sky's The Limit

Hair stylist are beauticians, not magicians. They can take what is in front of them and make it clean, precise and beautiful. But no matter how talented they are, they can’t make hair grow. I have had countless clients ask me to transform them into this model in the hair magazine, give them this style or color they found online, or simply voice to me how much they desire volume, length or coverage. When all is said and done, however, all stylists have their limitations. No matter what your natural hair looks like, with wigs and hairpieces you can be effortlessly transformed into the best you.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! We are glad that you all love wigs as we do. There are certainly stylists that want what’s best for their client, and we are thankful for them! We do want to make sure that people who have hair loss know that there is an option for them beyond the chair and and encourage them to be educated on wigs and hair pieces as an option.

Many of us here at wigs.com are stylists as well, and know that oftentimes wigs are not discussed in the average salon for one reason or another, sometimes simply because stylists are uneducated in the area and don’t know just how far wigs have come and how many options are available! So keep on learning and trying new things and maybe you can even teach your stylist a thing or two!

After years of extensions (sewn in, glued in, micro beads), I’ve come to the unfortunate conclusion that I’ve ruined my already fine and genetically thin hair. I got used to going in to see my stylist, plunking down several hundred dollars, and going home with hair. However, this last time I took a closer look and realized it was even thinner on the sides where the extensions were fastened. I asked my stylist why she’d never said anything or offered an alternative (wigs?) and she didn’t have a good answer. Her answer was to put twice as many extensions in and call it good, without really asking or telling me. I’ve finally realized that it’s not worth ruining my hair and the money I spend every eight weeks will go nicely toward a wig or two…

I’m so glad wigs are more accepted now and will rock my wigs with confidence and no apologies or explanations. I know there’s wigs out there that will not only make me look and feel better, but will save me the precious hour or so each morning spent on my hair to no avail. That alone has lessened my stress and helped me feel more hopeful and I’d encourage anyone to try wigs, sometimes it takes time but is so worth it, watch videos when you can, and be proud of your helper hair! I’d caution anyone to stay away from extensions of any kind, sure, you’ll have a “gorgeous mane”-until you DON’T.

I have lost over half of my hair due to years of stress from my joband genetics. There is nothing worse than looking in the mirror and seeing it is getting worse and your scalp is starting to show. Self esteem bottoms out when you see your hair disappearing. Due to income being fixed, I have had to search for wigs that aren’t super expensive. My hairdresser suggested I try wigs. It was very hard for me to finally accept that it was becoming my only option after trying just about everything advertised to regrow hair. I am fairly new to wearing wigs but finally think I am finding my style. I am greatful for the option of wigs.

I’m truly blessed to have a stylist who actually encourages my use of wigs and extensions. I have fine hair, and just can’t get the volume or length I could when I was younger. My stylist takes care of both my bio hair and my faux hair and does it while making me feel amazing. Her theory is, if you paid for it, it’s your hair. She also clued me in that seldom (if ever) are all of the models with perfect hair not wearing extensions or wigs. Even her clients on Instagram usually have a couple of packs of hot heads extensions to make their gorgeous manes even fuller. #wiglover #selflove #loveoptions
