Understanding hair loss

You can get just the right amount of coverage you need based on the specific measurements of your area of hair loss. Our hair toppers and top pieces range from minimal coverage to full coverage and everywhere in between!

Hair loss is unique to each person and there are different levels of hair loss that both men and women can experience. You may be wondering what causes hair loss? Hair loss can be temporary or permanent and can be caused from a variety of sources such as genetics, prescription medications, anemia, pregnancy, stress, diet, cancer treatments, and more. Top pieces are a great solution for localized hair loss. If hair loss is more extensive or diffuse, wigs will be ideal.

Other Types of Hair Loss

Alopecia is the medical term for excessive hair loss. It can be caused by anything from chemotherapy and radiation therapy side effects to stress, age, genetics, poor nutrition and autoimmune disorders.

Androgenetic alopecia is genetic and causes 95% of hair loss -- often diffuse thinning for women and pattern balding for men. Alopecia areata, and various other types of less common alopecia, are autoimmune disorders resulting in hair loss ranging from small patches to complete hair loss which can be temporary or permanent.

Hair Loss by the Numbers

Although anyone can experience hair loss, women make up 40% of American hair loss sufferers -- 1 in 4 women in the U.S. (source: American Hair Loss Association). It may not be uncommon, but it can be upsetting. Unless you've experienced hair loss first-hand, it can be difficult to grasp the emotional toll it can take. For many of us, hair can be a surprisingly important part of our identity and for women, our sense of femininity.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the average person loses anywhere from 50 to 100 strands of hair each day - sometimes even 250 strands on hair washing days. But, hair loss becomes noticeable when the rate of shedding exceeds the rate of regrowth or when regrowth is thinner than previous.

What Alternative Hair Option Is Right For Me?

Each person’s hair loss journey is unique and requires different alternative hair solutions. Depending on the desired level of coverage, toppers are a great option for those that still want to show their biological hair but would like to add some volume.
At Wigs.com, we categorize our hair toppers into 3 categories based on the amount of coverage and volume to your look that they will provide.

We understand both the causes and effects of hair loss, and we're here to help you find a solution to regain your confidence.

For those with moderate to severe hair loss, double monofilament or 100% hand-tied caps are ideal, especially for those experiencing scalp sensitivity. They are extremely light-weight, more comfortable and softer to the touch than regular traditional or capless wigs. No matter what causes your hair loss, whether it is the result of chemotherapy for cancer treatment, alopecia, medications or something else, wigs really can help you look and feel like yourself again.

"In my opinion, this is a perfect wig. I am so happy with it. The hair is soft and beautiful. The hair fibers are thin and move like beautiful European hair. The wave pattern is perfect. It does not require a lot of combing. It looks just like the hair I use to have when I was younger before my hair loss...The density is realistic. No thinning required. Love love love this hair!"

"I just started chemo and was wig shopping and when I found Rachel I was instantly in love the color, the cap, the style this is the most natural looking light weight wig I already have my eye on my second color."

-Michelle

“It is just amazing! Light weight and lovely! This is the rooted brunette and it is truly wonderful. I’m a true wig novice and this looked amazing right out of the box! I’m in the thick of chemo and felt PRETTY for the first time in a very long while. Worth EVERY PENNY. Also - you can easily pull some back and part in different areas, as the front is lace.”
