Great wig, cheap price... Could be a knock-off!

Posted on July 11 2016

Place an order for a great wig at a really cheap price online? Chances are it’s too good to be true. Check first!

Foreign knock off sites use clever schemes to take money from their victims annually. The knock off industry is a BIG business worth as much as $461 billion according to an April 2016 post from Consumers fall for the allure of high ticket items at drastically reduced prices. Often they are left with nothing at all, or a far inferior product than the advertisement they have seen online.

The wig industry is not immune. Customers are taken in by beautiful images of name brand wigs and extensions offered at deep discounts. Instead, they receive fake products or may not receive anything at all. And once the transaction is complete, it’s nearly impossible for them to get their money back.

What can you do to protect yourself?

If the deal looks too-good-to-be-true, it very well may be. Unless it is a site you know is an established U.S. company, do a little checking on your great deal. Often these scammers use the image of celebrities (regularly stolen from across the web) to make you believe that you will receive the same look once you click on their product.

  • We recommend that you shop with the names you’re already familiar with and trust. These companies are established and can be held accountable by the Federal Trade Commission and the BBB. Make sure there is a U.S. presence which can be reached by phone. Call it. Make sure you are speaking to a person who sounds like they are here in the US.
  • Be on the lookout for Celebrity photos or photos with wigs or celebrities which don’t have a name or brand listed on each photo. Anytime there is a photo of a celebrity (or any model) hairstyle and not a wig… you can be sure you are getting a knockoff.
  • Price is certainly a factor. Unless it is a clearance item on a reputable website designed to clear a few styles and or colors… it is unlikely any wig is going to be sold for discounts 50% or higher. When the entire selection of wigs are at such discounts, it’s a tell-tale sign of a knock off site.
  • Payment options - if the site has a western union and/or wire transfers as payment options… look out!

Of course, these are some of the biggest flags to look for in protecting your shopping experience. The Scam sites are getting more sophisticated but you can still spot them if you are on the lookout for them. Sites like,,, and many more are taking millions from consumers every year. We found these and several more sites to beware of on

There are predators loose within the wig industry. They are taking advantage of the growing popularity of wigs….and so many unsuspecting women. It isn’t right but it isn’t being stopped. Do the only thing we can… speak up and spread the word. If you’ve been fleeced by these scam sites, let us hear about your experience. is the most respected site for wigs, hairpieces, and hair extensions.  As the premiere authorized dealer for alternative hair, you can rest assured any products you see on the site are always authentic and direct from the manufacturer.

Beware of, which claims to be based in the UK. Needless to say it’s Chinese, and is a sister company or clone of the notorious Wigsis. I was enticed into buying a wig by the photo of what I now realise is a Paula Young model, and what I received looked like something you could buy cheaply at a fancy dress shop! I’m now trying to get my money refunded by Paypal.

I have worn the Claire by Noriko for a few years now and I love it. I get so many compliments everywhere I go. However, the price of the wig has increased by over $50 dollars within 2 months. Unfortunately, it is now out of my price range and I will have to find another wig, unless I can receive coupons or sales notices. I think that a $50.00 price increase within two months is unreasonable.

All of the wigs at Wig Outlet go through an inspection process and we pride them on being restyled to perfection. None of these wigs are “knock offs”, they are just open box items that we don’t sell as new! This is the reason you are able to find such great deals there.
    Thanks for your question!

I have purchased several wigs from with varying levels of quality in what I have received. Has your clearance site ever sold knock-off wigs? Overall I am satisfied and would recommend your sites, but as you said, sometimes an offer seems too good to be true.

    Hi Teresa;
you are not alone, thousands of US customers fall for these Chinese fake wig sites, because they look legit.
Purchase from US sites only, there are plenty in the United States.
Thank you for sharing your story!

I’m fairly new to wigs and fell for the scam just as you described.
    Beautiful photos of celebrities, etc.
Ages later when the wig arrived from China, the hair was just glued on top like kids had made it.
Of course there’s no way to return it because shipping is exorbitant to China and even if they exchanged, all you’d get would be another ratty wig. Definitely have learned my lesson.
