Introducing Through the Designer’s Lens with Lisa Minervini

Welcome to Through the Designer’s Lens, an ongoing Wigs.com series featuring renowned wig designer and industry expert Lisa Minervini. With more than two decades of experience designing and developing alternative hair, Lisa brings a unique behind-the-scenes perspective to the details that make all the difference — from color development and cap construction to toppers, product innovations, emerging trends, and the questions our clients ask most.

Throughout the series, Lisa will share the expertise she’s gained from inside the industry to help you better understand your options and shop with greater confidence. To kick things off, we’re getting to know the woman behind the designs, the career that shaped her perspective, and what she’s most excited to share with the Wigs.com community.

An Interview with Lisa Minervini

Wigs.com: Tell us a little about yourself! How did you get started in the wig and alternative hair industry?

Lisa: "I actually came to alternative hair from the beauty world. For nearly ten years, I’d been working in beauty, and what I loved most was the way you could make a woman feel beautiful with something as simple as a swipe of lipstick. Then, in 2002, I was recruited by Paul Reynolds — John Reynolds’ son, and the owner and CEO of easihair pro, an industry leader in hair extension innovation. Paul is brilliant, visionary, and one of the most pivotal people in my career; he took a chance on me and changed the entire trajectory of my life. He convinced me to try the alternative hair industry, and he saw something in me before I saw it in myself."

"The moment I joined Jon Renau, I was bitten by the bug. I loved beauty — but alternative hair was different. It wasn’t just about helping a woman look beautiful; it was about helping her reclaim her confidence, her identity, and sometimes a part of herself she thought she’d lost. That kind of purpose was unlike anything I’d known before."

"Much of what I know, I owe to the Reynolds family. John and Stella Reynolds, the owners of Jon Renau, both became mentors to me. Stella designed the wigs before I stepped into that role, and I learned a tremendous amount from her. John has mentored me for over twenty years — he gave me not just my knowledge of this craft, but my passion for it. I truly wouldn’t be where I am without them."

"Today, I work independently, which gives me the freedom to focus on what matters most to me: the women I serve. Whether that’s creating products that are just right for them or simply helping them along their journey, everything I do comes back to them. I’ll always be grateful for the foundation I was given — but this work has always been, and will always be, about helping each woman feel like herself again."

Wigs.com: You've spent more than 20 years designing and developing wigs. What do you love most about what you do?

Lisa: "What I love most is the moment a woman puts on the right piece and sees herself again. Everything technical I do — the cap design, the color development, the comfort engineering — all of it is in service of that one moment. I’ve developed hundreds of products over the years, but it never gets old, because behind every product is a real woman who wants to feel beautiful, confident, and like herself. Getting to be a small part of that is a privilege."

Wigs.com: What makes a great wig? When you're developing a new style or color, what are the things you pay the closest attention to?

Lisa: "A great wig disappears — in the best way. You don’t think about it; you just feel like yourself. Getting there is a combination of things most people never see: the cap construction and how it sits, the hair quality, the comfort, and the color. On color especially, I pay closest attention to tone, dimension, root effect, and versatility — because flat, one-dimensional color is the fastest way for a wig to look like a wig. I want color that behaves like real hair does: dimensional, rooted, and alive in different light. And through all of it, I’m asking one question — how will this make her feel when she puts it on?"

Wigs.com: What's one thing you wish more people understood about wigs or alternative hair?

Lisa: "That luxury isn’t a price tag — it’s a standard. There’s a quiet assumption that alternative hair is a compromise, something you settle for. I wish more people understood how far the craft has come, and how much thought goes into a well-made piece. Every woman deserves to put something on her head that makes her feel like herself again — and that’s not a luxury reserved for a few. It’s the standard I hold for everything I build."

Wigs.com: Throughout this series, what kinds of topics are you most excited to share with our clients?

Lisa: "I’m most excited to pull back the curtain on how this industry really works — the things I’ve learned from the inside out over 20 years. How color is actually developed. What separates a good cap from a great one. How to find color that looks natural in every light. And honestly, how to shop with confidence instead of guesswork. My goal is for every woman to feel like she has an expert in her corner."

Wigs.com: What's one piece of advice you'd give someone shopping for their first wig?

Lisa: "Don’t rush it, and don’t judge by the photo alone. Color especially can look completely different on a screen than it does in person or in your own lighting. Give yourself permission to try, to ask questions, and to find what feels like you — not just what looks good in a product image. The right piece isn’t the one that transforms you into someone else; it’s the one that gives you back to yourself."

Just for fun...do you have a favorite wig, topper, color, or innovation you've worked on over the years? What makes it special?

Lisa: "Honestly, my favorite isn’t a single wig or color — it’s any piece that’s made a woman stop, look in the mirror, and feel like herself again. That moment never gets old, and I’ve been lucky enough to see it happen with so many products over the years. That reaction is the thing I’m always chasing when I develop something new. So in a way, my favorite is always the one I’m working on next — because every collection is another chance to help a woman feel beautiful, confident, and completely herself."

Outside of work, what are a few things you enjoy doing or that people might be surprised to know about you?

Lisa: "First and most importantly, my family is everything. I’m a wife and a mom to nine-year-old twins — a boy and a girl — and being their mom is the hardest thing I’ve ever done, and by far the most rewarding."

"Outside of my family, my great passion is cooking. And I mean cooking — if there’s a food I decide I love, I won’t look up a recipe; I’ll just figure out how to make it from scratch. No apps, no shortcuts, just pure “watch me invent this” energy. My husband will tell you I genuinely cannot sit still — I’m always moving from one thing to the next, and I’m fairly sure it drives him a little crazy."

"A few other things people might be surprised by: I won’t get into bed unless I’m freshly scrubbed and basically hospital-grade clean, and bold, loud prints make me twitch — give me something understated any day. And if there’s a problem to solve, I go full detective mode; I can track down the answer to almost anything at lightning speed. My family isn’t fully convinced I don’t have a direct line to Google’s servers."

"I’m loyal to the people I love, honest even when it’s hard, and I don’t give up easily — because to me, problems aren’t really problems. They’re just opportunities wearing ugly costumes."
