Wigs For Seniors... What Wigs Are Best?

Posted on February 24 2019

Wigs are a great solution to get perfect hair for any woman.  With the growing population of seniors, the demand for wigs and hairpieces is definitely on the rise!  But women classified as Seniors are not going over that hill without a fight.  More women over the age of 60 are looking at least 10-15 years younger because of the increasing focus on taking care of the body and mind.  Great hair is also a huge part in looking and feeling younger.  Wigs for seniors are basically any wig!

Best Wigs for Older Women

Wigs for Seniors - Raquel Welch's Stowstopper

We are seeing a trend toward the more fashion forward wigs and hairpieces for senior women. The wig trend for younger women of all ages celebrity or not is also gaining momentum, so it is not wonder that older women are on the bandwagon. Many celebs are talking about their wig habit quite openly..actually, almost shouting it from the rooftops as their wigs and hairpieces are a big part in why their hair looks flawless!  This definitely makes the trend spread more quickly.

Hairpieces for Senior Women - Christie Brinkley's Natural Tone Hair Wrap

The days of going shorter and more matronly just because you’re are maturing… gone!  Fine wine gets better with age.  We can too!

One good rule of thumb is to pick out your favorite facial feature and find a style to highlight it.  You don’t have to get an “old lady” cut or length just because you are over 60.  You won’t find wigs for seniors because you can choose any wig you like!  I mean…. Have you seen how amazing Raquel Welch looks in all her wigs?  Okay… there is only one Raquel, but we can look as good by following her lead on some simple things to keep in mind:

  • Keep it Simple! – feel comfortable in your style.  Don’t succumb to the “rules” of aging that you feel you have to adhere to.  If you like your hair a bit longer… go for it!  Stay simple and true to yourself.  You know what works for you. Don’t go crazy, though! Leave that to Lady Gaga.  Upgrade your own style 😉
  • Go for a Natural Looking Hairline -  Say it with me….."Lace front!"  it is so important to have a natural hairline. This is huge for your confidence in wearing wigs. Lace front wigs come in human hair wigs and synthetic wigs. They make all the difference if the hairline of the wig is going to be visible at all.  Rule of thumb: if the hairline shows…make sure it’s lace front.
  • Don’t go too Bulky at the Crown – Lots of women think height at the crown gives a fuller look...however, it has a tendency to scream wig!  Fullness should be even on the top and not give a bouffant look at the crown.
  • Don’t Think age appropriate means ‘Short’ – Short wigs can be fun and gorgeous on many women…but make sure a short style works for your face shape and style.  A short wig on the wrong face shape can add years to your look.  Not exactly the look we are going for!
  • Color is Key! – Although Grey is the new black as the grey color trend for younger women sweeps the globe, don’t feel like you have to go grey just because you are a ‘woman of a certain age’.  You can pull of most any color at almost any age.  This is a fact! I get that you can embrace your silver locks with style if you are a confident woman… go for it!  But for those of us who don’t want to go gently in to that silvery night…. Play with color that makes you feel younger!

Wigs and Hairpieces Senior Women

So wigs for seniors are not old lady wigs.  They are all the top brands and the latest styles that everyone else is wearing.  Break free from the stereotype in your mind that just holds you back! Look for a hairstyle that you feel compliments your face shape and matches your lifestyle. Whether you go with a gray wig or finally go for it with that vibrant red you have always wanted to try..the key is confidence! There are no rules anymore.  Own it and wear it with style!

It would be GREAT to see wigs for older women modeled by older women and not 20 – 30 – 40 year olds but 50 – 60 – 70 year old women. Young faces look good in many wigs older faces would not look good wearing.

I disagree that rooted colors look more natural on everyone. As a blond, going gray, the rooted colors look harsh and unflattering and unreal on me. I would like to see more mixed gray-blonds in mid length wigs. Even on women who might look fine in some rooting, to me it’s always too dark, and gives the impression of a black band around their face. A wig with shorter and much lighter roots….and absent around the hairline would look better……in my opinion!

I prefer Superior 60+ (or 55+) to Senior as far as terms. 😊
I’d enjoy a page of Superior 60+ women in longer silver wigs, toppers, blonde-grays like “Shaded Vanilla,” etc.
A moderate costing custom option of having 30 or 40 stray gray hairs sewn into the lace front and mono tops to help brown, black or auburn wigs much more believable!
Silver, white-gray wigs in beautiful in chin-length or longer styles can be quite believable. Ladies don’t have to look ridiculous in thick hair: Thin the wig!

Do not agree that any wig suitable for over 70.Must look like your own hair

  • Jo: January 16, 2019

Older women do NOT have thick hair. Nothing looks more ridiculous than to see a 60 – 70 year old woman with a thick haired wig. Why don’t wig makers realize this?

I thought this article would actually provide some wig suggestions for seniors, rather than just stating the obvious and saying “any wig” can work.

I would like to see more wig styles offered in grey shades. I wear wigs all day, every day, and rotate between 4 different brands/styles. Three of these styles don’t come in any greys at all, and the fourth one comes in one grey only and it is nearly snow white in the front.

We need a much better selection of greys: from salt-and-pepper to snowy white, with several in between. I would especially like to see them in the short, spiky styles.

    Hi Carol!!
Good question. It depends on the style and color of the wig.. but I always think rooted colors look more natural, no matter the age. Call us if you would like to talk more!

Are rooted wigs appropriate for older women? On younger women, roots naturally grown in dark so it looks natural if you have a more blond wig. But older women’s roots grow in gray. Opinions please? I don’t want people to know I’m wearing a wig.

I am 62. I look fairly younger for my age. I am into wigs now. When I was younger of course I didn’t need a wig. My hair has become thinner. Another thing back then it wasn’t a lot of colors of wigs or hair color. Now I am into color wigs. One time last year I colored the front part of my hair blue. It was so pretty, especially in the sunlight. I got a lot of compliments. But there was a few, "asked why did I do it. Of course I told the why.

I am 67 yr old. I wear wigs everyday but most of the time not when just in the house. My hair is very dark brown and the front is getting silver. But I am not teady to go silver ( i have hair loss on top) and my face cannot do dark colors anymore.. So I gone blond. From brown highlighted, to blond in front to creamy toffee and to platinum rooted. I own many wigs but cannot buy one unless I see it on someone in video, other than the still model pictures. I have thought bought many after seeing them on your one model in videos. She WAS GORGEOUS but has now had work done on her lips and she looks fake. Before she did this, I bought a Jon Reneau wig that I glazed over in the ‘out of box’ pics, but then in a video she messed up one side with her hand it sold it for me. No matter our age, the problem is that most of these wigs, unless extrememly short, do not look good right out of box. We need videos of them out of box then with styling tips. Seeing some real people wearing it in their reviews as just out of the box sometimes send me running, others ate great. For some just raking of their fingers thru it could truly help them not look like they have a wig on everytime they put it on. Videos of styling tips especially for those who do not understand the multitudes of different looks they can get would be great. And not just on twig thin people. Watching a woman go from no wig to a wig and then her personal style tips is a real selling point. Having a wig description state face shape it is best for also helps tremendously! Then you need to know your face shape. But “owning” it when you wear ‘your look’ is a big part of wig wearing! Having confidence. Most movie stars you NEVER SEE without wigs and or extensions! And when someone says they LOVE your and say thank you! It IS YOUR HAIR.. all bought and paid for!

Yes, older women do not want to see wigs recommended for them on young women or older women who have had a ton of plastic surgery. Let’s be real. Show us women who look like us.

I have cancer and know nothing about wigs.
Please help me decide on a wig. I bought one and they said all I had to do was have it trimed. But it still looks like a lion mane. I paid $800.00 dollars.
I need short to medium hair length highlighted hair. It could be synthetic
. The one I bought is part human and part synthetic.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    PS I am a senior.
