What Are the Six Types of Face Shapes?

Before determining which face shape you have, it's important to understand the six different types: oval, round, heart-shaped, square, diamond, and rectangle/oblong. The shape is usually determined by the dimensions and proportions of the forehead, cheekbones, jawline, and chin. Below are the key features of each one:

Oval Faces: The forehead is slightly wider than the chin, and the face length is about 1.5 times the width.

Round Faces: Circular-shaped face with larger cheeks and little to no angular structures.

Heart-Shaped Faces: This shape has a wider forehead with more pronounced cheekbones and a chin that comes to a point.

Square Faces: The forehead and jawline are more pronounced and are often the same width.

Diamond Face: From the forehead to the cheekbones to the chin, the proportions create a diamond-like outline. A more pronounced chin and angular jawline are also features of a diamond-shaped face.

Oblong/Rectangle Faces: The face is long and narrow where it is rounded at the top and bottom with a narrower chin than the oval face shape.

How to Find Your Face Shape

To find your face shape, look in the mirror. Decide what part of your face is the widest. You can either do this by sight or using a measuring tape. Take a photo of yourself and trace the outside of your face with your finger to see which shape it resembles.

How to Pick a Wig for Your Face Shape

If you're looking for some style inspiration, here's some ideas on which wigs look great with your face shape.

Oval Faces

Most hairstyles look fantastic on oval faces. Whether you love pixies and bobs or shags and long tresses, you’ll look fabulous in them all! Here are a couple of our best wigs for oval faces.

Round Face

When looking for hairstyles for round faces, the goal is to help elongate the face by slimming down the roundness of the cheeks. Therefore, it’s best to pick shoulder-length hairstyles, long, layered cuts, medium bobs, lobs, long shags, angled bobs, and textured pixies with volume at the crown. If you prefer wigs with bangs, opt for side-swept bangs, wispy bangs, or long curtain bangs.

Avoid hairstyles sitting above the chin or with too much volume at the sides. It can emphasize the roundness of the cheeks.

Heart-Shaped Face

Choosing the right hairstyle for a heart-shaped face comes down to personal preference. It helps to find styles offsetting the width of the cheekbones and strengthening the jawline. While short to chin-length hairstyles best suit this face shape, there are other haircuts offering a flattering look for heart-shaped faces.

These haircuts include: pixies, layered lobs, shags, chin-length bobs, butterfly cuts, and long waves. If you want bangs, opt for hairstyles with long piecey bangs, blunt bangs, feathery bangs.

Avoid styles that add width to the cheekbones and expose the whole forehead as this can make the face look disproportionate.

Square Face

In order to find the perfect hairstyle for the square face, choose styles designed to soften the sharper angles of the face through layers, bangs, or length. These options include: bobs, choppy pixies, lobs, shags, and long layers. For bangs, choose curtain bangs or side-swept bangs.

Avoid hairstyles creating volume at the widest part of the face, including blunt cuts, one-length bobs, or thick bangs.

Diamond Face

Since diamond faces have higher cheekbones, choose styles to flatter this particular feature. Long layers, bixies, textured lobs, medium-length styles, and curly bobs are good options to consider. Opt for haircuts with textured bangs, face-framing bangs, and side-swept bangs for a breathtaking hairdo.

Like with square faces, avoid short blunt bob cuts and full bangs. It can unbalance the facial proportions, creating a “boxy” appearance.

Oblong/Rectangle Face

Hairstyles for oblong and rectangle faces depend on your preference of bangs, layers, and volume. Additionally, choose wigs with texture because it will help make the face more symmetrical.

We recommend blunt bobs, piecey pixies with bangs, angled bobs, wavy hairstyles, shags, and voluminous hairdos with layers for oblong/rectange faces. Full bangs, curtain bangs, and blunt bangs are very complementary to this shape.

Avoid sleek long hair without any layers as it can make the face appear longer.
